Henning School

Since 1926 we have celebrated past and present Veterans on November 11, unless it falls on a weekend and then we celebrate it on the following Monday. 

In our United States military we have over 19.5 million heroes who have served.  At the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier located in Arlington, Virginia a special Veterans Day National Ceremony is held each year and televised. In 1918, Germany and the Allied nations formed an armistice (an agreement, a truce) to end the Great War.

President Woodrow Wilson declared on the first anniversary of this armistice that November 11th the United States would celebrate our veterans of World War 1. In 1926, Congress authorized the president to honor and recognize the armistice on November 11th and it was made a national holiday in 1938. It wasn’t until 1954 that this holiday became known as Veteran’s day, in honor of all the service members who have fought in wars.

On Friday, Nov. 11, over 200 students will be honoring our Veterans by giving a concert in our high school gym at 1 p.m. Any veteran that will be attending this concert is asked to either wear or bring their uniform along to the concert, as Mrs. Horn, our music teacher, has a special moment in the program planned.  

This is an event that each year brings me to tears. It is a time when our students stand proud and sing their hearts out in honor of all the men and women who have and continue to fight for this great nation of ours.
