In today’s fast-paced world, many parents find themselves balancing demanding careers, household responsibilities, and personal commitments. Despite the pressures of modern life, hardworking parents can serve as the cornerstone for instilling a strong work ethic in their children teaching them about perseverance, discipline, and the value of hard work and this oftentimes shapes their approach to life and success.
My mom was always saying “actions speak louder than words” and this was especially true when it came to teaching her children the value of hard work. My parents are 86 and 83 years old and they work every single day. They have shown my siblings and I the importance of dedication to each other (they’ve been married 63 years) and commitment to careers, children, and community. I have never seen my parents give up on anything, which has been an invaluable lesson: success is often the result of consistent effort, not luck. We learned early on that hard work is a necessary and respected part of life.
Resilience is the ability to overcome a problem and still move ahead and can be one of the most important qualities in hardworking parents. When we would watch our parents tackle a problem whether it was on the farm, in their career, or with one of us kids, they would do it head-on and this taught us to be the same way and it taught us that challenges are a natural part of life and that if we are persistent, overcoming the problem can happen.
When my brothers and I would make mistakes, we were taught that we needed to take responsibility for ourselves and our actions. We were taught to not blame others for things we had done ourselves. The more responsible we became the more freedom we were allowed in making choices, which in turn had us taking pride in our tasks and accomplishments.
For all the hardworking parents out there I want to say thank you for the role you play in shaping your child’s work ethic, resilience, and overall success. Leading by example you have instilled in your child responsibility, confidence, pride. Hardworking parents create hardworking kids, equipping them with the tools they need to thrive in every aspect of life.
