Weather affects us daily, are we going to have moisture or not have moisture, is it going to be sweltering hot or bitterly cold? We live in this wonderful land where we are lucky to enjoy four seasons. My oldest brother lives in Atlanta and rarely sees snow, and being an outdoorsman most of his life, I know he misses it.
For me, my favorite time of year is spring through summer because I love to mow the lawn. This is probably why my two daughters mowed lawns for their summer jobs! Having only mowed two times all of last summer, I really hope that this year we see much needed moisture that can help our crops to grow and our lakes to fill up. We are featuring a book about weather this week.
The book is “Weather,” by Valerie Wyatt and Brian Share. This book has the answers to frequently asked questions about the weather. For example, “Does it ever really get hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk?”
According to this book, “when a heat wave struck Grimsby, Ontario, on July 9, 1936, driving the temperature up to 108 degrees Farenheidt, people decided to find out. They cracked an egg on a hot patch of sidewalk and sat back in the shade to watch. In just seven minutes the egg was fried.”
This book also tells us of the hottest temperature ever recorded, at Al’aziziyah, Libya at 136.4 degrees Farenheidt. The coldest temperature at Vostok, Antarctica was recorded at -128.6 degrees Farenheidt.
This book’s illustrations are colorful and comical at the same time. If you would like to know some great answers to your weather questions we hope you’ll come on up to the Henning Library and check out this or one of many of our other books on weather.
We are open from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons following the school calendar.
