According to the book “Memorial Day” written by Robin Nelson, “Memorial Day began during the Civil War. During this war, Americans from the Southern states fought Americans from the Northern states. They were fighting over whether the United States should stay one country.

The first Memorial Day was actually called Decoration Day.  It was celebrated on May 5, 1866 in Waterloo, New York.  We raise American flags only halfway up the flagpole as a way to honor those who have died. Navy sailors throw flowers into the ocean to remember the dead. Soldiers at army bases fire their rifles into the air to honor those who have died. “

In the book “Memorial Day” written by Lynda Sorenson  we see images of Gettysburg national Military Park, Arlington National Cemetery, The Tomb of the Unknowns, and we learn why it is so important that we remember the sacrifice our great men and women of our military have given.
