Quilting is a passion of mine. I made my first quilt when I was 10-years-old. I still have this quilt 45 years later. It is pink gingham with white eyelet lace around the edge.  Being the only girl with three brothers, I luckily love the color pink.

My mom made matching pink gingham curtains to go with my quilt and she even made pillow shams.

The next quilt I made was of corduroy and it was quite large. Always an over achiever, I figured since I made a successful twin quilt, how hard could it be to make a king size quilt from corduroy?

Luckily my mom was there to guide me through the process of shoving a heavy large quilt through my old singer sewing machine neck!  Since then, I have made several quilts to give away. This past winter I made an orange and green quilt to give as a wedding present to a distant family member and I decided to put the year on the quilt. Each quilt is so unique.

As I sew the quilt pieces together, I think of the person that will be receiving the quilt and the joy I feel as the quilt is being created. I am currently working on a log cabin quilt with a bear paw.  I am hoping to keep this one for myself.

My mom and I own a quilting machine together, however it is housed at her home in Montana, so I have begun hand quilting my quilts. This process gives me great relaxation time.

If you enjoy quilting or want to learn more about it, come on up to the Henning Library and check out one of our books about quilting.

The featured book this week is called “Introducing Quilting” and is written by Eoroam Short. In this book, basic techniques are explained.  There are step by step instructions with images as well.

We are open to the public following the school calendar on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30-5:30 p.m. We’d love to see you and bring along a quilt you may have made or are working on, it would be great to see your work!
