With a grant of $3,000 from the Otter Tail Power Company our library has purchased many books on STEM. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. By introducing our youngest students to STEM, we hope to foster an interest in these subjects that could lead our students to careers in these fields. Over the course of the next several weeks, we will be showcasing several series of these books.
Our first series is by S.E. Burr and is called Math Pirates: Adventures in Learning. This series offers an engaging way to introduce young readers to mathematical concepts in a unique way.Using pirate themed adventures combines both storytelling and education in math, which leads to exploration and problem solving.
These stories have the reader following a crew of mischievous, lovable pirates on escapades that involve math challenges. Subtraction, addition, fractions, and geometry are written into the story and this allows the reader to critically analyze and apply what they learn. Readers will learn about perimeters, division, coordinate planes, and maps all in a relatable and easy to understand way.
Math Pirates is more than a bunch of educational books, it’s a gateway to fun and practical math skills. When you combine adventure with learning, it empowers children to have math confidence and curiosity. STEM is all about trying and trying again until you succeed!
The Henning Public and School Library is open on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30-5:30 p.m. You can access us through the elementary entrance during that time or you can come up at any point during the day through the District Office entrance. We will be here waiting for you!
