“Wild about Minnesota Birds,” a youth’s guide to the birds of Minnesota is a perfect book to have for all seasons of Minnesota. Because our students are so curious, we thought this book might help to satisfy them while they also are learning about nature.  This book is perfect for the home, cabin, back yard, on a car trip, or even at the park. When you spot a bird you would like to identify, first you should find the habitat of where you located the bird at. Was it in the forest, in an open grassland, along the shore? Next, think about the silhouette of the bird you are wanting to identify.  Is it small or large? What are the birds’ field markings?  

For example, my absolute favorite small bird is the American Goldfinch. It is about 5 inches in length and has a wingspan of 9 inches. The male is bright yellow during the summer months and olive green during winter. They have a black “cap” upon their head and a white rump. Their tail is black and notched.  The book lets me see the image of both the female and the male.  It lists their life cycle and what their habitat food of choice is. It is written in an attractive way that draws the reader to want to read all of it. It shows where in Minnesota I can find the American Goldfinch during the summer and year around. I have learned that these birds nest in Mid July to mid August, when thistle and milkweed down are fluffy and mature.
