Henning School

Ed Cunningham once said, “Friends are those rare people who ask how we are, and then wait to hear the answer.”

I do not know Ed, but I do know that this sentence he spoke is very true.  During our lifetime we will have friends who come and go, maybe we come and go ourselves, but while we are together we are meant to be learning something from these friends.  Recently a very wonderful friend of my family passed away. Her name is Gae Zentner.  

This extraordinary woman was a kind and loving woman who took into her heart many other people’s children.  She was an amazing English teacher, Speech, Student Congress, One Act Play, and Musical Coach from Richardton, N.D. She became a second mom to my oldest daughter and a surrogate grandmother to my grandkids.  Even though we had moved away from her, she took the time to keep engaged in the life of my child.  

Through the hundreds of students that passed through her classroom she impacted them greatly and it truly showed by the immense amount of young people at her funeral service. Gae was not one who would just say, “how ya doin’?” because first of all, she was an English teacher and she just didn’t speak like that, but secondly if she asked you, she waited to hear the answer. At age 61, we lost her too soon. Her values and her morals have been passed on to those she so deeply touched.  

In honor of Gae, this week’s featured book is about love and Kindness.  “I Am Love, A Book of Compassion” written by Susan Verde with art by Peter H. Reynolds.  The inside jacket cover of this book reads, “I put my hands on my heart and listen.  And that is where I find the answer:  I have compassion.  I act with tenderness.  I am love.  Love means showing kindness, living with gratitude and taking care of our minds and bodies.  Letting our hearts lead the way and help move us closer to a better world. I Am Love asks readers to  look inward when they feel afraid, angry, hurt, or sad.  When a storm is brewing inside us and the skies grow dark, the transformative power of love lets the light back in.”
