Our second featured book in the Henning Public School library is “Landscapes of Minnesota” written by John Fraser Hart and Susy Svatek Ziegler.  

This book features 16 chapters filled with many subjects on Minnesota.  It covers the battleground of the elements, the shape of the land, the evolving ecosystems, indians, voyageurs, croupiers, dividing the land, industry, settlers, wheat to dairy farming, the corn belt, small towns, iron ranges, demographic atlas,  the twin cities, the lakeshore resort and retirement belt and what the future for Minnesota looks like.  There are images of the Mississippi River, paddlewheel steamboats,ice fishing, the Metrodome and many small towns.  

Another book that is new to our library is The Minnesota Book of Skills, your guide to smoking whitefish, sauna etiquette, tick extraction and more!  Written by Chris Niskanen.  The cover of this book makes you want to pick it up and check out what’s inside.  Here are just a few of the listed chapters in this book:  How to harvest Wild Rice, build your own backyard ice rink, DIY death rituals, portaging etiquette, catch and fry a Walleye, Maple Syrup 101, making homemade sausage, build a birchbark canoe, town name pronunciation, the tunnel of fudge cake, how to land a Muskie, Ice dam confidential, the essential elements of a rope swing.
