Our featured book of the week is “The Scarecrow” by Beth Ferry and illustrated by the Fan Brothers. According to Wikipedia, Terry and Eric Fan are American-born Canadian children’s book writers and illustrators who made their picture book debut with The Night Gardener (2016), which was named an ALA Notable Children’s Book. The illustrations in our featured book are beautiful, They are soft and very realistic, the winter scene is almost as though you are looking through a snow globe. This story is full of love between two unlikely characters, a scarecrow and a crow.
Fall has become an emotional time of year for me. Maybe it’s my age and all the dynamics that come with it but I like to think that it is the excitement that comes off of the students as they enter the library to so many adventures waiting for them. This book is so beautifully written that several times while reading it aloud to the second graders, I could feel the lump begin to build in my throat. Maybe a reason why this book was so capable of having the listener feel the emotions is because we recently added Novel Effects to our library reading time. This is an app that plays music and sound effects to the story that is being read. It hears my voice and times the sounds of the story to it.
When I took a poll of the second grade class to see how they felt about the music and sound effects going along with the story, they all loved it. This will be something special that the students will get to enjoy as part of their experience in the library. We have such a beautiful, welcoming space and we hope that you will come and experience it, too.
We are open on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30-5:30 p.m. following the school calendar.
Have a wonderful week Citizen’s Advocate readers, we hope you are noticing the crows and scarecrows as you go about your week!
