Fall is the perfect time to refresh your containers with rich colors, interesting textures, and seasonal accents. A few well-chosen annuals and perennials can turn a porch, patio, or entryway into a welcoming autumn display.

Start with 

fall-favorite annuals

Mums are a classic choice, offering flowers in warm shades of gold, bronze, orange, red, pink, and white. Pair them with ornamental kale and cabbage for colorful foliage and added texture.

For cool-weather color, try pansies and violas. Their cheerful blooms work beautifully around taller plants and come in plenty of autumn-inspired shades. Celosia is another option for adding bold color and interesting flower shapes.

Add perennials 

for texture

Perennials can bring foliage and structure to fall containers—and many can be planted in the garden later.

Heuchera (coral bells) offers foliage in shades of burgundy, purple, caramel, and green. Ornamental grasses add height and movement, while sedum provides interesting texture and late-season interest. For a trailing effect, try creeping Jenny spilling over the edge of the pot.

For an easy container design, choose a tall thriller, such as ornamental grass; a mounding filler, such as mums or heuchera; and a trailing spiller, such as creeping Jenny.

Finish the container with a few mini pumpkins, gourds, pinecones, or decorative branches for an extra touch of fall charm.

Whether you prefer classic mums and pumpkins or a more natural combination of grasses and foliage, fall containers are an easy way to bring seasonal color to your home. Mix colors, textures, and heights—and have fun creating a display that’s uniquely yours.
