Editor’s note: The following information was provided by Henning School regarding voting for the November 8 election.

Throughout this November election season, the Henning Public School District has shared information with district residents about the bond referendum requesting funds to maintain its K-12 facility and improve security, health and classrooms.

The district is proposing two ballot questions. Question One requests a $21.7 million investment. With these funds, the school district would update elementary classrooms that have been in use for 50 to 70 years. The district would also upgrade 60-year-old elementary bathrooms to meet federal accessibility standards.

As part of Question One, the district would build a controlled main entrance, a new parking lot, a dedicated parent drop-off and pick-up area, and a playground for students of all ages and abilities. A new career and technical education addition would contain a woods lab, a metals lab, a classroom, and support spaces. A portion of the building would be converted into a dedicated cafeteria and student commons area. Question One also includes improving indoor air quality systems, replacing the 60-year-old gym floor, updating stage equipment for student performances, and making other infrastructure upgrades.

Question Two requests an additional $4.6 million investment. As part of Question Two, the district would build a new high school gym to provide more space for students to participate in athletic practices, physical education, and events. The district would also update high school restrooms and restrooms near the gym and replace an additional section of the roof. Question Two is contingent on Question One, meaning it cannot pass unless Question One also passes. District residents can cast their ballot in one of three ways. They can request an absentee ballot by calling 218-998-8040 or apply online. Absentee ballots must be returned by 3 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 8.

Alternatively, residents can visit the Otter Tail County Government Services Center to vote early in person Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Extended voting hours are available on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Monday, Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Finally, residents may visit their designated polling place on Election Day. To find their polling place, voting hours and information on registration, residents are encouraged to explore the voting page on the district’s dedicated referendum website, OurSchoolOurHornets.org/vote.

Depending on where a resident lives, one or both of the referendum questions may appear on the back of the ballot. If voters approve Question One, a residential home in the district with a median value of $200,000 would see an estimated tax increase of $40 per month. If Question Two passes, that same home value would see an estimated tax increase of $8 per month, for a total of $48 per month starting in 2023.
