The beauty of the leaves on the many wonderful trees we have in Minnesota.  How great it is that we can see so many different colors of leaves.

We have a great book here in the library that is titled “Trees of Minnesota Field Guide” by Stan Tekiela. The following information was gathered from this book. The Green Ash is a very popular tree, it’s habitat is wet soils, along streams, lowland forest, and in the shade.  It is found throughout Minnesota and can grow from 50 to 60 feet tall.  In the fall the leaves are yellow.

The Paper Birch tree can grow from 40 to 60 feet tall and is found in moist soils especially in the northeastern two thirds of the state and it also has yellow leaves in the fall. The Boxelder tree is found throughout Minnesota in wet areas, along streams, lakes and flooded areas, and in full sun.  Another yellow leafed tree in the fall.

The White Oak is found mostly in the southern half of the state, can grow up to 70 feet tall and in a variety of soils.  It has a red brown leaf in the fall.  The Balsam Poplar tree  grows best in moist soils, river valleys, and is shade intolerant.  It is found in the northern half of the state, can grow up to 70 feet and it too has a fall leaf color of yellow.

The Pussy Willow grows in wet soils, along shores, swamps, and wetlands.  In the fall it has a yellow color, grows to 20 feet and can be found throughout most of Minnesota.

The Northern Red Oak grows in the Eastern half of the state in moist soils and in dry soils.  It grows upwards of 70 feet and has a red leaf in the fall.  We hope you will find yourself out and about in Minnesota viewing the beautiful leaves on our many different trees.

What a grand state we do live in.
