Library Happenings

Henning School

May 5, or Cinco De Mayo, is our topic for this week.  Beautiful and brightly colored costumes are often worn on this day, with large sombreros sometimes bigger than the people wearing them. This fifth of May is a special day that Mexican Americans celebrate joyously reminding them of their hard fought battle over the French army on May 5th, 1862 in the town of Puebla, Mexico.

The worn out and ragged Mexican army persevered over the French even though the odds were stacked against them. Mariachi musicians playing guitars, trumpets,  and violins walk around playing joyful music while dancers in full ruffled skirts clap and stomp along to the music.

Tortillas can be found all around, filling the air with a wonderful smell. These tortillas are often filled with tomatoes, lettuce, and beans, and the ever present hot peppers!

We have several books on the Fiesta holiday of Cinco De Mayo and hope that you will find yourself up at the Henning Library looking to check one out. Invite some people to gather and enjoy your own fiesta this day.

The library is open on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30-5:30 p.m. following the school calendar.
