Pallbearers were Ken Schmitz, Anthony Dolezal, Wayne Retzack, Adam Berscheit, Blaine Butler, Charlie Wachlin, Randy Smetak and Thomas Pappenfuss. Military Honors were provided by Deer Creek American Legion Post #283 of Deer Creek, Minnesota, and Minnesota Army National Guard of Moorhead, Minn. Devin was laid to rest at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Henning.

Devin Ernest Horn was born on March 28, 1983, at Detroit Lakes Hospital to Lyle and Karen (Ellenberg) Horn of Deer Creek. Devin liked to tell his birth story of how he was born in a March snowstorm via emergency c-section with the cord around his neck, after his Ma had labored at home for three days with a midwife before going to the hospital. He came into this world as a fighter. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Deer Creek on May 1, 1983.

Growing up in the country, Devin loved farming, nature, playing football, baseball, hunting, spearing and fishing. He had many fishing tales of his adventures with Tom and Terry Wendt. He was a member of the Deer Creek Go Getters 4H club and showed dairy cattle and sheep. He started working for area farmers at the age of 11. He was confirmed March 23, 1997, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Deer Creek.

Devin graduated from Wadena-Deer Creek High School with the class of 2001. He liked to say he was the last class to complete K-6th grade in the Deer Creek elementary school.

After high school Devin joined the National Guard, he completed his basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. He served in Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 1-194th Apache from October 2004 to December 2005. He made lifelong brothers in the military and was incredibly proud of his service to our country.

July 2004, Devin’s Ma drug him along to a horse trail ride event outside of Henning, where he met Samantha Loock. They went on their first date the following week. They remained together through deployment where Devin told Samantha if they could make it through Iraq they could make it through anything.

Returning home from Iraq in 2005, Devin and Samantha resided on a farm outside of Deer Creek. Devin worked at Evergreen Equipment while farming. They were married on March 4, 2009, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Henning. They moved to his grandparents’ home farm on county road 140, where they welcomed Ella in 2009 and Everett in 2011.

In June 2015 the demons nearly consumed Devin, but God wasn’t done with him on Earth and kept him here with us.

Moving to their safe haven home outside of Henning in September 2015, they welcomed Emmett in January 2016. Devin welded Crestliner boats at Lund’s and would work the fall potato harvest with RDO, before he was able to farm full-time for himself.

While Devin loved to hunt, fish, or shoot the breeze with friends, his true love was farming. Planting and harvesting crops, he took pride in his hay fields and raising calves. He worked hard to improve his beef herd and start Ella with a dairy herd and improve her genetics. The last year he worked as an independent breeding technician for Select Sires where he loved to visit with the farmers and increase his knowledge of the dairy industry. He had a deep love for International Harvester tractors and had a vast knowledge of their equipment lines.

He was a member of the Wadena VFW, and the Deer Creek American Legion.

On April 14, 2025, the demons consumed Devin and he died at his home at age 42.
