0Carol Lynn Mae Scheel (née Andersen), age 80, died August 2, 2023, at her home in Battle Lake, surrounded by family and assisted by Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Carol was born on February 19, 1943, to E.A. and Helen Andersen in Badger, South Dakota. She resided in various places in South Dakota while growing up and graduated from Huron High School and Huron College in Huron, S.D.
While working at Huron Public Library, a group of rowdy young men came in. Amongst this group of young men, she met the love of her life, Monte Scheel. They were united in marriage on June 25, 1965. Together they raised three children, Greg, Mark and Andrea.
Carol was a librarian at several schools in South Dakota. She enjoyed working with students of all ages throughout her career and was passionate in getting them interested in reading.
She and Monte retired from careers in education and moved to Fargo, N.D., in 1995, to be near their children. She worked as an office manager to keep busy, but her favorite job was being able to help take care of her 4 grandchildren. She was a crafty grandma and always had hands-on activities to keep the grandkids busy and out of mischief.
Carol joined Peace Lutheran Church in 1995. She was a very active church member and participated in Altar Guild and various other church groups throughout the years.
She loved knitting, crocheting and creating unique gifts. She always had a project for Monte to cut something out of wood or fasten pieces together of a crafty design. She loved playing games with anyone and was very good at winning, but would occasionally lose a game out of pity for her opponent. She enjoyed watching sports and was a diehard Minnesota Vikings and Twins fan (despite the players not listening to her armchair coaching).
Carol and Monte moved from Fargo to Battle Lake, in 2012. They spent years together there enjoying lake life and each other’s company.
Carol is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Monte Scheel; son Greg (Odie) Scheel of Fargo, N.D.; daughter Andrea Scheel of Fargo, N.D.; granddaughter Sarah Scheel of Fargo, N.D.; grandsons Andrew Scheel, Nicholas Scheel, Mathieu Scheel, all of Fargo, N.D.; great-granddaughter Keira Syverson and great-grandson Terry Syverson, both of Moorhead, Minn.; brother Roy (Sharon) Andersen of Huron, S.D.; sister Margaret Andersen of Rapid City, S.D.; brother-in-law Gene (Charnelle) Scheel of Perham; nieces RaeAnn (Rod) Hopf of Huron, S.D., Marsha Zimmerman of Omaha, Neb., and Darla Scheel of Perham; along with many great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, E.A. and Helen Andersen; sister Judy Van Den Berg; and son Mark Scheel.
Carol’s family extends their gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Perham Health in Perham, and to Hospice of the Red River Valley for the phenomenal care they provided.
A Memorial Service was held on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at 11 a.m. with visitation at 10 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Fargo, located at 1011 12th Avenue North.
