Bette Ann Hermann was born on January 3, 1942, to the late Mildred (Dorow) Clasen & Robert Hermann in Sioux Falls, S.D. She was baptized on February 7, 1942, in Sioux Falls, S.D., and confirmed on March 25,1956 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ottertail.
Bette attended St. John’s Parochial School through grade 8 and graduated from Henning High School with the class of 1960. Bette was united into marriage to Delvin Menze on October 27, 1962, and their marriage was blessed with two sons: Daniel and Michael.
Bette was a devoted and dedicated farm wife working side by side as she supported Delvin on their Portage Lake dairy farm. Her hands were always busy serving others. She was a woman of deep faith and always had a smile on her face. Looking through the window of her life she could be found gardening, canning, preserving, raising chickens, feeding calves, painting buildings, washing and waxing cars to a shine, doing lawn care at home and church, and driving tractor during harvest season. Bette was also an enthusiastic loon watcher for the DNR.
Bette’s kitchen held the aromas of meals in the oven, freshly baked bread, cookies, pies, cakes, and other desserts which she offered to family and visitors, always having a cup of coffee as they gathered for casual conversation around the dining room table. She especially enjoyed being a part of her grandchildren’s lives as she acknowledged birthdays, holidays, and other activities.
When Bette’s health began to fail, she became a resident of Willow Creek and the Country Living Adult Foster Care of Henning, for three and a half years. The family is grateful for the kindness, special care from Karlene and her staff all with encouraging visits from Pastor Weber during that time.
Bette is preceded into death by her mother and stepfather Raynold Clasen, and father and stepmother Gertrude Hermann.
Bette went home to Jesus on July 28, 2025, left to honor her memory are her husband of 63 years Delvin; sons: Daniel Menze and Michael (Denise) Menze; brother Ronald (Karen) Hermann; step-sister Bonnie (Tom) Wegner; step-brother Paul (Sandy) Hermann; grandchildren: Garrett Menze, Riley (Jack) Sausman, Jared Menze, Emily Menze, Jacob Menze, and Makayla Menze; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
