About Citizens Advocate
The Citizen’s Advocate has been serving the Henning, Ottertail, Vining and Deer Creek area since 1891. The newspaper officially began on Thursday, March 12, 1891 with the first issue of the Alliance Advocate. The newspaper gave the Henning community a newspaper to call its own.
The Henning Advocate later evolved into the Citizen’s Advocate, which it remains today.
The newspaper currently serves the communities of Henning, Ottertail, Vining and Deer Creek, Henning Public School and countless townships in the surrounding area. The Citizen’s Advocate and its staff takes great pride in the communities and groups that we serve. Our goal is to give everyone a voice in the community, no matter how big or small their organization or group.
The Citizen’s Advocate was purchased in September of 2010 by Henning Publications, LLC and its owners Chad and Dani Koenen. The Koenen’s moved the newspaper operations to its current location at 412 Douglas Ave. in downtown Henning in 2011.
Henning Publications also operates the New York Mills Dispatch, which was started in 2013 and serves the communities of New York Mills, Bluffton, Ottertail and Deer Creek.
In 2018 Henning Publications purchased the Frazee-Vergas Forum which serves the communities of Frazee, Vergas and everywhere in-between.
The Citizen’s Advocate is published each Tuesday morning in the heart of downtown Henning and has a circulation of right around 900 people each week.
