Henning to wrap up regular season in Ashby on Friday night

The Henning Hornets quickly rebounded after losing three straight games by winning three games in four days last week. The three wins increase the Hornets winning streak to four games as they improved to 20-4 overall and secured a second place finish in the Park Region Conference. 

The Hornets finished their conference schedule with a record of 12-2, with their lone losses coming against New York Mills. 

This week the Hornets will take on Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal on Tuesday night and travel to seventh ranked Ashby on Friday in a match up against two of the top ranked teams in Section 6A and the state. 

The sub section tournament kicks off next week. The Hornets are currently in second place in the north half of the sub section according to the QRF rankings. 

Wednesday

Henning quickly shook off any rust it had from last week’s snowstorm by defeating the Menahga Braves by a score of 77-57 on a rare Wednesday night game. The Hornets shot nearly 48 percent from the field and had 23 assists on 27 made field goals on the night. 

“Menahga is a talented team offensively and we struggled for stretches getting consistent defensive stops. But, our guys competed hard and stretched the lead to 20 plus in the second half,” said head coach Randy Misegades.

Henning also finished with 31 rebounds and hit 10 3-pointers in the win.

Tyson Misegades hit four of those 3-pointers as he finished with 23 points and 6 rebounds, while Mason Hammer scored 21 points to go along with 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 6 steals.

Also reaching double figures was Kale Misegades, who hit a pair of 3-pointers to finish with 10 points.

Tanner Arndt scored 8 points to go along with 5 assists and 9 rebounds. Lane Dilly scored 6 points, Dawson Misegades scored 3 points, Carter Dilly scored 3 points, Carter Kenyon scored 2 points and Noah Umland rounded out the scoring with 1 point.

Friday

Henning defeated Highway 210 rival Underwood in commanding fashion on Friday night by a score of 80-34. The Rockets didn’t score until midway through the first half and trailed by a score of 47-14. 

Head coach Randy Misegades said he was pleased by the defensive performance by the team all night long.

“We were pleased with the effort of our guys tonight. We played solid on the defensive end. Our ball movement offensively afforded us a lot of open shots and a number of guys were able to knock them down. Underwood has a very young group that is only going to get better,” he said. 

The Hornets once again moved the ball throughout the game as they had 23 assists on 30 made field goals and also went 13-24 from behind the 3-point line.

Mason Hammer led the way offensively as the junior scored 19 points and hit three 3-pointers. Tyson Misegades also hit three 3-pointers to finish with 17 points, Kale Misegades hit three 3-pointers to finish with 15 points and 6 assists, while Carter Dilly finished with 13 points after hitting three 3-pointers of his own. He also tied for the team lead in rebounding with 7. Carter Kenyon didn’t score in the game, but finished with 7 rebounds.

Tanner Arndt scored 6 points and had a team-high 7 assists, while Lane Dilly had 4 assists. Noah Umland and Riley Bode each had 3 points to round out the scoring. 

Saturday

Playing their third game in four days, the Hornets defeated Verndale in a close Park Region Conference game by a score of 57-46 on Saturday afternoon.

“We found a way to grind out a road win. As well as we played offensively on Friday night, we struggled that much today. Verndale’s defense had a lot to do with that,” said head coach Randy Misegades. “The game didn’t have a lot of flow as both teams were whistled for a lot of fouls. Our lone senior, Tanner Arndt, held us together today.”

The Hornets led by a score of 27-20 at halftime and shot 44 percent from the field.

Arndt led the charge offensively as he scored 25 points to go along with 6 assists and 7 rebounds. Kale Misegades also reached double figures with 11 points, while Mason Hammer added 8 points. Carter Kenyon scored 5 points, Lane Dilly finished with 4 points and a team-high 11 rebounds and Tyson Misegades rounded out the scoring with 4 points.
