Hornets improve to 15-8 with a pair of wins

0Henning to wrap up regular season on Friday
The Henning varsity girls basketball team had a busy week with four games scheduled last week. Inclement weather canceled Friday’s game so Henning was only able to get three of the games. The girls went 2-1 on the week to bring their overall season record to 15-8.
Monday, Feb. 14 at New York Mills 52-36 lost
On Monday, the Hornets traveled to New York Mills for a conference game that was rescheduled from the week before due to inclement weather.
Unfortunately, the Hornets didn’t really show up ready to go in this one and really struggled overall. Despite early struggles, Henning found themselves down by just one point by a score of 26-25 at halftime. In the second half the Hornets continued to struggle to score and ended up losing by the final score of 52-36.
NY Mills didn’t shoot much better than Henning, but unfortunately the Hornets allowed the Eagles to take 21 more 2-point shots due to 19 offensive rebounds. That was ultimately a huge part of the loss. The Eagles finished with 40 points in the paint, while Henning only had 20. NY Mills had 19 offensive rebounds to Henning’s 7. The Hornets also had 17 turnovers, compared to their 10. All of these numbers definitely led to the defeat.
Individually the Hornets were led offensively by Faith Fisher and Ally Hart with 15 points each. Lyvia Misegades and Natalie Eckhoff each tallied 3 points to round out the scoring. Misegades led the team with 7 rebounds, Fisher led with 2 assists. The loss dropped Henning’s conference record to 7-5.

Tuesday, Feb. 15 at Verndale 77-29 win
On Tuesday, Henning traveled to Verndale for another conference game. The team was hoping to have a better overall showing than the Monday night game.
Henning came out and struggled the first few minutes as the team didn’t score in the first 3 minutes of the game and trailed 6-0. That’s when Henning got things turned in the right direction and the girls did a great job of working together again by getting quality shots. The team continued the find success on the offensive end of the court by taking a 52-19 lead at halftime.
In the second half the Hornets continued to play well and decided to pull their starters with 11 minutes left due to the remaining games in the week. Henning ended up winning by a final score of 77-29.
Head coach Mike Hepola said it was a great overall team effort that was highlighted by a perfect 15-15 from the free throw line as a team. The Hornets were also 10-19 from 3-point range and shot 53.1 percent from the field, because they played well as a team, made the right passes that led to the best quality shots. The win brought Henning’s conference record to 8-5.
Individually the Hornets were led by Faith Fisher once again as she scored 21 points. Ally Hart and Lyvia Misegades joined her in double figures with 16 and 15 points respectively.
Alivia Gunderson finished with 6 points, while Lily Fraki, Gretchen Eckhoff and Natalie Eckhoff all finished with 5 points each. Ava Eckhoff and Aaliyah Olson each finished with 2 points to round out the scoring. Misegades led the team with 6 rebounds. Hart led the team with 4 assists, while Misegades and Fisher both tied for the team lead with 5 steals each.

Thursday, Feb. 17 vs. Frazee 65-46 win
On Thursday night the Hornets hosted Frazee for Parent’s Night. While Frazee doesn’t have a great record, head coach Mike Hepola said they are a pretty solid team who plays a tough schedule. Henning got off to a real nice start again and held a 36-21 halftime lead, before winning by the final score of 65-46.
This was parent’s night and head coach Mike Hepola wanted to thank the parents and other family members of these girls for the opportunity to coach these girls and also thanked them for allowing them to be a part of the team and be with their teammates.
A huge plus in this game was once again the Hornets shooting percentage as Henning finished with 56.3 percent shooting as the team did a good job of working the ball around and getting good quality shots.
One of the biggest highlights was the fact Henning had four players in double figure scoring and that is the type of team the Hornets certainly can be.
Lily Fraki did a great job and led Henning in scoring finishing with 16 points. Ally Hart and Lyvia Misegades each scored 14 points, while Faith Fisher added 12 points.
Aaliyah Olson finished with 5 points and Natalie Eckhoff and Ava Eckhoff each added 2 points to round out the scoring. Misegades led the team with 8 rebounds,while Fraki grabbed an impressive 7 boards. Fisher led the team with 6 assists.
The win brought Henning’s record to 15-8 overall.
