In their first game in nearly a week, Henning came out of the gates a bit slow on Friday night, but held on for a 71-56 win over Wadena-Deer Creek. The game was part of a boys-girls doubleheader that also included a win for the girls team.

Mason Hammer scored 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in last week’s win over Wadena-Deer Creek. The Henning junior has helped the Hornets get off to a 16-1 start on the season.

“After a bit of a sluggish start, we made a nice run before the half. WDC should get a lot of credit; they wouldn’t go away. Even though we were a little short-handed playing without Calvin Stueve, our guys stuck with it and found a way,” said head coach Randy Misegades.

The Hornets led by a score of 30-18 at halftime and shot 50 percent from the field. The high percentage from the floor included going just 4-21 from beyond the 3-point line.

The Hornets were led offensively by Mason Hammer who scored 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to finish with a double-double. 

Tanner Arndt scored 18 points to go along with 5 assists and 6 rebounds, while Tyson Misegades scored 12 points and had 6 assists. Misegades also led the team with 5 of the Hornets 6 steals on the night.

Lane Dilly finished just 1 point short of also recording a double-double as he scored 9 points to go along with 11 rebounds and 3 assists. Also scoring for the Hornets was Kale Misegades with 4 points, Riley Bode with 2 points and Carter Dilly with 2 points. 

This week the sixth ranked Hornets will get a chance to avenge their only loss so far this season as they travel to fifth ranked New York Mills on Tuesday night. Henning comes into the game with a record of 16-1 overall, while NY Mills is 17-1 on the season. The Hornets are 9-1 in the Park Region Conference, while the Eagles are 9-0. 

In addition to Tuesday’s match up between two of the top ranked teams in the state, the Hornets will travel to Verndale on Friday night for another conference match up against the Pirates.
