Sheriff deputies reported that on July 9 a resident in the town of Ottertail reported being a scam victim, losing $180.

Con artists oftentimes lure people into buying gift cards in order to claim what in reality are false prizes. Once the gift card numbers are given out, the money is gone.

As an example, if someone says you won $3,000 or another amount but must buy gift cards in order to claim the prize, see this as a scam and hang up the phone.

“If something seems too good to be true, it may likely be a scam attempt,” said a sheriff deputy. “Heed the warning signs.”
