The Leif Erikson Sons of Norway hosted its annual Midsummer celebration on June 24 at the Vining Community Center. The night featured a variety of games, activities and a large pole to celebrate the arrival of summer. In Nordic countries, Midsummer is the most celebrated holiday of the year, next to Christmas. The community gathers are outside, in parks where each park and community has a Midsummer Pole, up to 50 feet high, which are decorated with greens of all types plus flowers, then with a team of persons holding long poles. The tree-like pole is pushed upward and upward until it is straight and then fastened sturdily at the base.
