Otter Tail County-The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced the election of Spencer McGrew as the new Chair of the Statewide Aquatic Invasive Species Advisory Committee. McGrew’s leadership in Otter Tail County has been instrumental in developing and implementing effective AIS prevention initiatives, and his new role will allow him to bring his expertise and leadership to the statewide level.

McGrew’s election as Chair reflects his commitment, knowledge, and leadership in AIS prevention efforts. His colleagues have praised his ability to collaborate and lead meaningful progress in protecting Otter Tail County’s 1,048 lakes and Minnesota’s waterways.

Roger Neitzke, Chair of the Otter Tail County AIS Task Force, congratulated McGrew: “Congratulations to Spencer on being elected Chair of the DNR’s Statewide AIS Advisory Committee. His leadership of the Otter Tail County AIS Task Force has been outstanding. His knowledge of AIS threats and his ability to develop effective prevention programs have exceeded all expectations. I look forward to seeing him continue this success at the state level.”

The Statewide Aquatic Invasive Species Advisory Committee, established by the DNR in 2013, guides AIS prevention and management. The committee, composed of 15 members, offers recommendations on field operations, research priorities, policies, and outreach efforts to combat the spread of invasive species in Minnesota’s lakes and rivers.

“As the AIS coordinator for Cook County, Minn., I have known Spencer for his nine years in the AIS role. Spencer and I joined the Statewide AIS Advisory Committee in 2024, and I proudly voted for him as Chair,” said Amanda Weberg, Aquatic Invasive Species Program Supervisor. “He has demonstrated unwavering commitment, knowledge, and passion for this committee. He is a dedicated leader who champions broad understanding among members and fosters continued growth.”

As the AIS Specialist for Otter Tail County, McGrew leads a team of 25 trained watercraft inspectors who conducted 11,307 inspections in 2024. He has also collaborated to install 16 I-LIDS camera systems at public accesses, launched two public rinse stations on high-traffic lakes, and actively engages with schools and community organizations to raise awareness about AIS prevention.
