0Funeral services were held for Christian Haugen on Friday, October 18, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Henning, with Pastor Keith Lankford officiating. The hymns were sung by the congregation, accompanied by Carleen Markuson. Special music was provided by Kim Haugen. Pallbearers were Christian’s grandchildren: Jason Haugen, Jacob Haugen, Christopher Haugen, Nathaniel Leppanen, Justin Leppanen and Kristina Leppanen. Honorary Pallbearers were Bill Wischnak, Amy Walter, and Reanna Herk. Christian was laid to rest in Norderhaug Cemetery, rural Henning.
Christian Courtland Haugen was born on February 22, 1941, in Wadena. His parents were the late Otto and Neola (Redfield) Haugen. Christian grew up on the family farm in Leaf Lake Township, rural Henning, that was homesteaded by the Haugen Family on May 10, 1878. Christian graduated from the Henning High School with the class of 1959.
On August 27, 1960, Christian was united in marriage with Lou Ann Downing at Elmo Lutheran Church, Parkers Prairie. Their marriage was blessed with 3 children: Curtis, Charlie and Cindy. Together Christian and Lou Ann made their home and raised their children on the family farm in Leaf Lake Township. Christian was also employed for 20 years at Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative where he was a sugar boiler as well as farming.
Christian enjoyed deer hunting, duck hunting, gardening, wood working and collecting antiques, especially wood planers. He was honored to ring the bell at the Norderhaug Cemetery every Christmas Eve, was an avid member of the Scandinavian Sons of Norway, member of Dalton Thresermans Club and working in the woodshop, member of the Henning Saddle Club.
On October 13, 2024, Christian passed away at Perham Living in Perham, at 83 years of age. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Preceding Christian in death were his parents, Otto and Neola Haugen and infant daughter. Christian is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Lou Ann Haugen of Henning; two sons: Curtis (Kim) Haugen of Henning; Charlie (Kristen) Haugen of Rothsay; daughter, Cindy (Rodney) Leppanen of Swan River; six grandchildren: Jason Haugen, Jacob Haugen, Christopher Haugen, Nathan (Jenny) Leppanen, Justin (Sarah) Leppanen and Kristina (Hali) Kivari-Leppanen; step grandchildren: ReAnna Herk, Amy Walter, and Bill Wischnak; five great-grandchildren; two brothers: Courtland (Karen) Haugen of Grand Forks, N.D. and Cedric (Kathy) Haugen of Green Bay, Wis.; many other relatives and a host of friends.
