0Hornets to host Braves in conference action
The Henning Hornets had a busy week as they were on the road for all of their games.
On Tuesday, Henning traveled north to Sebeka for a rescheduled game. On Friday they traveled to Bertha-Hewitt for an afternoon game and then on Saturday the Hornets traveled to Parkers Prairie for a tournament.
The week was a tough one for the Hornets as they faced some very solid teams and a lot of the girls were fighting some sickness that has been going around.
On Tuesday, Sebeka overpowered Henning and won the match 3-0.
Head coach Kristy Finck said the Hornets made way too many errors throughout the match. This is mainly due to poor passing, which caused Henning’s sets to be off.
Finck said she always tell the girls, if they can’t pass the ball to the target, they are going to struggle. Game scores were 14-25, 16-25 and 18-25.
As a team Henning only had 24 kills, hitting at a low .079 and their serving was very poor, as they only served 87 percent. One positive was the Hornets were able to get a few good blocks on the night. Alivia Emter led the team in serving, as she served 8/8, she had 10 set assists and 4 kills. Myiesha Antoni led the team in kills with 4 and blocks with 4.
Henning’s game with Bertha-Hewitt was full of ups and downs. This was a 1 p.m. game due to homecoming for the Bears. The gym was packed and extremely loud.
After being down 0-2, the Hornets were able to pull off a 3-2 victory at the end of the day. The Hornets started off very slow and played with very little energy the first two sets and then they started to play quicker and gained more confidence as the game progressed.
Emmalyn Bergstrom had a career high 23 kills to lead the Hornets offensively. She also served 100 percent (9/9) and had 3 blocks. Myiesha Antoni had 16 kills and 2 blocks, Addison Bode had 13 kills, served 14/14, and had 12 digs, Bella Olson had 10 kills. Cambrie Johnson led in assists with 28 and Alivia Emter had 27. Lillian Moench led the team defensively with 26 digs.
On Saturday the Hornets were in an eight team tournament in Parkers Prairie. It was not the day the Hornets were hoping for.
Henning did not play the way we have been playing. The Hornets had very little energy, made a lot of mistakes and just could not get the momentum to go their way.
Henning started the day playing Long Prairie-Grey Eagle. The Hornets were able to pull off a 2-1 win, but it took a lot of energy to do it. The Hornets lost the first set 29-31 and then bounced back and defeated the Thunder 25-15 and 15-9.
Henning’s next game was against Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley and the Hornets could not get anything going. They had a really solid middle and outside hitter that caused a lot of trouble for Henning’s defense.
Next up was the top ranked West Central Area. They brought the majority of their state team from last year and it showed. They had weapons in every position and the Hornets just couldn’t stop them. Finck said she was proud that the team never quit as they put up a good fight, but just got overpowered.
Henning’s final game was against Park Christian. Again the Hornets just could not get anything offensively going as they were stuck playing defense the whole game.
Finck said if the Hornets want to start picking up some wins they are going to have to start passing better as this will help the setters and hopefully the hitters can start getting more kills. The Hornets will also have to start serving better. She said they are making far too many mistakes from behind the line. Finck said she tells the girls, serving is the one skill they can individually improve on.
Leading the day for the Hornets was Alivia Emter, she had 11 kills, 29 set assists, 3 aces serve and 21 digs. Myiesha Antoni led in kills with 23 and blocks with 11. Brynn Reinbold had a good day as she had 8 assist blocks. Addison Bode played well and had 10 kills and 25 digs for the day. Cambrie Johnson had 27 set assists and led the team with 6 ace serves. Lillian Moench led the team with 33 digs for the day.
The Hornets get a much needed break until Thursday, when they host the Menahga Braves in a Park Region Conference match.
