Henning’s first-ever National Night Out event took off on Tuesday—literally for part of the night. Mike Helle, who helped organize the event, estimated there were over 400 people who attended the event. In fact, volunteers served 350 hot dogs for a free-will donation and ran out of hot dogs with 45 minutes to go. Among the highlights of the night was a Life Flight helicopter that landed and took off on the baseball field as part of National Night Out.

Many people may have read in last week’s paper about how the local VFW Ladies Auxiliary donated a number of books to the school and nursing home. Those donations will be the last official activity of the Auxiliary, member Sharon Vin reports, unless additional membership is brought in immediately. Vik reports that the 56-year-old Auxiliary currently does not have enough members to legally hold an election. Flyers have been left around town for some time, urging eligible women to join, but so far the need for new members goes unmet.
Work began last week on the new Henning municipal gas system, which is to bring natural gas service to approximately 300 homes and businesses in and near Henning. The project is expected to take about 10 weeks, with the system to be in service around November 1. Residents are asked to not disturb the flags, spray paint and other marking that may be found around town as they mark other utilities so they are not harmed during construction.
