Purchasing a new pumper truck isn’t as easy as going to a used car lot and picking out the vehicle that looks the prettiest, or has the best design. It’s a process that took the Henning Fire Department nearly 10 months as they picked out everything from the rivets to the design of the ladder on the back of the truck. The truck was purchased near Sioux Falls, S.D. and members of the volunteer fire department visited the factory to go through a lengthy book to learn about the features on each truck. Even after spending an entire day customizing the new pumper truck, members of the fire department had to make another trip to Sioux Falls to check on the progress of the truck when it was being constructed.

Otter Tail County GIS personnel were comfortable in their third place position, says Brian Armstrong. Now they find themselves “leading the pack” of counties implementing E-911 systems. “We would learn from other’s mistakes,” he said. “As far as we can tell, we are now on a lot of new ground.” The county’s GIS department will conduct an aggressive mailing campaign asking residents for their phone numbers. Those phone numbers will then be linked with addresses in the E-911 system. The result would give dispatchers more thorough information when dispatching emergency personnel in response to a 911 call.

The average citizen feels quite certain he could run a newspaper better than the editor, and if he was publishing that sheet, he’d show ‘em you can bet. As a matter of fact, if he has horse sense, he would do just as the editor does—put the soft pedal on family rows, church squabbles, and such matters of minor consequence which will adjust themselves as time goes on. Don’t expect the long-suffering small town newspaper men to advocate or attack any proposition which you yourself lack the courage to support or attack over your own signature.
