Tuesday, Jan. 16 at Bertha-Hewitt 53-52 win

On Tuesday night Henning traveled to Bertha-Hewitt to take on a much improved Bears team. Henning fell behind 12-0 early on, but were able to bounce back and only trailed 28-27 at the half. The Hornets held a couple of small leads throughout the first half.

The second half was a back and forth battle, Henning was up by as much as 8 points. The Hornets had a 1 point lead with about 3 seconds left with Bertha-Hewitt having the ball out of bounds just over half court. Bertha-Hewitt’s last second attempt from half court was right on line, but bounced off the rim and Henning came away with the 53-52 victory.

Head coach Mike Hepola said it wasn’t the prettiest of victories but as they stress, it’s better to win ugly sometimes than lose pretty.

Individually the Hornets were led offensively by seniors Lyvia Misegades and Ella Missling both in double figures with 28 and 16 points respectively. Alivia Gunderson 5 points and Lila Thorson 4 points rounded out the scoring. Misegades led the team with 8 rebounds and 5 steals while Gunderson led with 5 assists.

Friday, Jan. 29 vs. Menahga 78-42 lost

On Friday night Henning hosted Menahga, who came in with a 12-1 record, and undefeated in the Park Region Conference.  Head coach Mike Hepola said he is proud of the way the girls came out in this one as they were within 2 points at 21-19 in the first half. Unfortunately then a combination of some cold shooting by us, hot shooting by them led to a 37-25 halftime deficit.  The second half the girls continued to battle before Henning lost by the final score of 78-42.

Individually the Hornets were led offensively by Lyvia Misegades with 17 points and Ella Missling with 9 points.  Alvia Gunderson and Lila Thorson both scored 7 points each and Monica Hansen 2 points to round out the scoring. Misegades led the team with 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.

The loss drops Henning’s overall record to 6-8 and 3-5 in the conference.

This week the Hornets have a pair of games as they travel to Pillager on Thursday and then host Frazee in a Snow Week day game on Friday with the varsity starting at 1 p.m. On Friday the Hornets will be playing in front of the entire student body and JV will follow.
