Long before she was a force on the court for the Central Lakes College-Brainerd Raiders, Paige Wallevand was dominating the middle of the court for the Henning Hornet volleyball and basketball teams. The 2017 HHS alum was recently named as the Northern Division Player of the Year and was selected to the MCAC All-Northern Division first team this season. The Henning setter/hitter posted 179 kills, 813 assists and 53 ace serves in her sophomore season.

The Henning School Board once again received some positive news in terms of its financial picture last week. During its regularly scheduled meeting the district heard its annual audit report from representatives from Eide Bailly. Revenues exceeded expenditures at the Henning School District last year by approximately $121,000, despite the district spending nearly 11 percent, or $493,051 more than budget. That overspending of the budget was offset by receiving nearly $611,000 more than budget, or 13.7 percent. Part of the reason for the difference between the budget and actual amount is due to the district’s conservative budgeting, in which it budgets for less students than are actually enrolled in the district. It also did not set a revised budget half way through the year.

Meeting in regular session at the Henning School, the school board were visited by a number of students and parents regarding the proposed Spanish trip to Mexico, attempted to begin the process of making budget cuts, and heard several reports from the auditor, the principal on the Hornets Nest, and reports from the superintendent on discipline problems and the Honeywell Energy Saving Contract.

The report on the ongoing Thumper Pond TIF (tax increment finance district) discussion was brief, but decidedly positive in tone. Although the council took action earlier this month to establish the TIF itself, yet to be determined is the precise Development Agreement, the actual contract between the city and the developer under which the proposed golf course and housing development project might be built.

Mrs. Herman Hannebuth of Inman Township had a close call Monday. Mrs. Hannebuth was making sauerkraut when she heard something strike the kitchen range. Investigation revealed that a rifle bullet had passed through the house and struck the heavy nickel on the stove below the warming oven. Mrs. Hannebuth was exactly in line with the path of the bullet, but luckily it struck the stove first. The bullet, which was fired from the gun of Maurice Meintsma of Inman, first killed a deer and then traveled 60 rods and into the house the well shattered bullet was found on the kitchen floor.

The first real Minnesota blizzard of the season arrived on Monday. The wind felt intensely cold and but few people ventured out into the streets unless it was urgent to do so. The snow drifted badly so it was difficult to get through with either sleigh or wagon. The local trains were a trifle late. The morning passenger west bound did not reach here until after 7 Tuesday morning.
