It’s been a busy first week at the helm of Henning Public School for new superintendent Mike Rowe. In just a short time in the community, Rowe said he has already seen how much the school means to the community. Prior to coming to the district, Rowe was the instructional coach at the ROCORI School District in Cold Spring, Minn. He held that position for one year after teaching third grade for eight years at ROCORI.

Four Henning High School seniors will be competing for the title of Henning Festival Queen on Friday night. Competing for the title of Henning Festival Queen will be Samantha Witt, Madisyn Johnson, Marissa Rehm and Kayla Sweno.

Dave Hawes and his three grandsons Sawyer, Everett and Lincoln caught a large snapping turtle from their dock on Saturday, June 30 on Long Lake near Ottertail. The turtle latched on to a small sunfish and would not let go before Hawes grabbed the turtle by the tail and hauled it in. After taking a few quick pictures the turtle was released back into the water.

Two local high school students have received distinction for their poetry which appeared in the 1947 Anthology of High School Poetry. Marine Lueder’s poem and Jane Albright’s poem are as follows:

My Winter Spring

They sing of the spring

When the tulips bud

And the willow catkins climb. But

I found spring in November

When the first soft snowflakes fell.

The group was wrapped in feather white

Like silvered grass in pale moonlight

And bridal treat with snow blooms bent

To meet the lacy flower beds

Yes, Spring has flowers, leaves and grass,

But spring is spring can never share

The lace and blooms of velvet snow;

My Winter Spring

A Child’s Faith

If only we had the faith of a child.

A faith in God, a faith in life,

Not a lukewarm faith or mild,

But one that’s cutting as a knife.

A child will go to bed at night

And say a prayer to one unseen

An angel’s guarding him from fright.

His trustful sleep is a lovely scene.

I just can’t help thinking

How this earth would lie,

If we all had a faith unblinking

A faith in the Power on high.

Considerable excitement was caused Tuesday morning when it was reported that a man answering the description of Rust, murder of the sheriff at Breckenridge was sleeping in Ole Allenson’s barn. The man was easily captured as he almost collapsed from fear. He was surprised when he learned who he was mistaken for. The prisoner explained that his name was Johnson, but was traveling incognito towards North Dakota harvest fields because he was without funds or friends.

Charles Garland, the Long Island millionaire who is devoting his fortune to the advancement of modern ideas said at a Greenwich Village tea: “Our ideas on marriage need over hauling badly. Marriage isn’t the Utopia—it isn’t the life-long ecstasy the all the world pretends. On the contrary, a successful marriage, is a refrigerator that chills love—chills it so it will keep.

WAR BULLETS

Latest news from the seat of war

A special dispatch to the New York Mail and express from Santiago de Cuba signed by Henry Stodard says that Sampson’s fleet is being prepared for an attack on Havana which will be commenced as soon as operations at Santiago de Cuba are over.

According to schedule General Shafter will begin the bombardment of Santiago at noon today if before that time most of the women and children and non-combatants have left the city, many of them going behind American lines. They expected to be fed by the Americans, but this was not possible, and the conditions of many is pitiable indeed.

It was an ideal fourth of July, not an arrest, an accident nor a hitch marred the day. At least 3,000 people came to see Henning ablaze with enthusiasm on this American Day. Quite a few men indulged freely in liquor but no one became uncontrollable. There were sufficient police on hand to keep order.

Electricians supply us with current topics and physicians with news of the weak.
