Sandy Quammen died December 12, 2022 at his home in Battle Lake.

He was born August 31, 1947 at home in Stanley, N.D. to Gordon and Irene Quammen.

He grew up in Stanley, N.D. attending both grade school and high school graduating in 1965. He was on the town’s swim team.  He was proud of his second place finish at sections in wrestling. He attended NDSU in Fargo graduating with a BS degree in math and chemistry in 1970. At NDSU, Sandy met Marjorie Buchholz. They were married in 1969. They raised two daughters.

In high school, Sandy and his friends liked looking for old cars and their parts. Sandy and his brother Stan, with the help of their dad, rebuilt a Model T and a Model A. Sandy was devoted to his dad who ran the Quammen Blacksmith shop in town. Starting when he was about 12, he’d work there after school and weekends. He learned how to sharpen plow lays and the craft of metal working. When he was about 16, he and his dad built a half scale model of a Civil War cannon. Sandy set it off several years at the Battle Lake 4th of July fireworks. In the summer of 2022, the cannon went back to North Dakota. Sandy enjoyed watching it being set off several times last summer.

Sandy and Margie taught school for seven years in South Dakota. He returned to school at Wahpeton SSS and earned an associate’s degree in business. In 1970, they purchased Lakewood Products in Battle Lake. He made kitchen cabinets and did custom wood working. He built many pieces of furniture and projects for his own house and his children’s. He retired from working six years ago.

He became an EMT in South Dakota and helped Battle Lake organize its own EMTs in the ‘90’s. He served on the Battle Lake Fire Department for 20 years and served as chief for two years.

He enjoyed reading, being on the computer, and fixing old Singer sewing machines. He enjoyed talking. He knew lots about different subjects and had a firm opinion on everything. As you well know, he was a better talker than listener.

He was intensely proud of his children, their husbands, and the grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie, daughters Amanda (Mike) Klein and Alexis (Ryan) Krebs. Both couples live in Dickinson, N.D.  He has two grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother Stan (Helen), N.J. Other survivors are sisters-in-law Joan (Gary) Lee, Casselton N.D.; Judy (David) Frueh, Harvey N.D; and Naomi (Fred) Aziz, Jamestown, N.D.; and Mary (Jeff) Lane, Alexandria, Va. Also he has two brothers-in-law Bill (Sonia) Buchholz Casselton, N.D. and John (special friend Sofia Marquez) Buchholz Durbin, N.D. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents and two sisters Sandra Baade and Susan Mountain.
