Henning overcame a sluggish first half to power past the Verndale Pirates by a score of 45-33 on Thursday night.

The Pirates held a slim 14-13 lead at halftime, before the two teams picked up the offensive output in the final 18 minutes of action. The Hornets were the benefactor of seven 3-pointers by going 7-16 from behind the 3-point line in the game. 

“We are proud of the effort from our guys tonight and happy with the win against a quality, well-coached team. We really had to battle and find a way in an ugly game,” said head coach Randy Misegades.

In a back and forth game, the Hornets were able to put some distance between them and the Pirates thanks to four Tyson Misegades 3-pointers and a couple of timely shots from Mason Hammer and Kale Misegades.

“We were finally able to stretch the lead midway through the second half with 3’s from Tyson Misegades and Mason Hammer sandwiched around a pair of 3’s from Kale Misegades,” said Randy Misegades.

The Hornets finished the game by shooting 40 percent from the field and pulled down 26 rebounds. Randy Misegades once again credited the work of Ethan Houselog in the paint as the senior pulled down 6 rebounds in the win. 

“Ethan Houselog was solid defensively for us which was huge for our team. And Calvin Stueve gave us some quality minutes off the bench and did some nice things on both ends of the floor,” said Randy Misegades.

Tyson Misegades led the charge offensively as he scored 17 points, including four 3-pointers in the win. Hammer joined him in double-figures with 12 points of his own.

The win improves the Hornets to 7-3 overall and 5-3 in the Park Region Conference. This week the Hornets will host Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley in non-conference action on Tuesday, before hosting Menahga in PRC action on Friday night.
