0Doris “Jeanne” Vik, age 94, of Battle Lake, (formerly of Henning), passed away on April 10, 2023 at Good Samaritan Society in Battle Lake. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at United Methodist Church in Henning with Pastor Valerie Shaw and Pastor Jim Wolf officiating. Congregational Hymns were accompanied by Betty Baumbarger. The pallbearers were Neil Bond, Randy Bond, Greg Borgas, John Schoon, Laurie Nordquist, Julie Schecker, and John Gunkel. Jeanne was laid to rest at Inman Cemetery, Henning.
Doris was born at home near Henning, to Clarence and Viola (Foggy) Bond. She lived in and near Henning until moving to Battle Lake in 2007.
Doris, known as “Jeanne,” and Lewis Sanford Vik were married October 18, 1946 at the Wadena County Courthouse in Wadena, by the Justice of Peace.
Jeanne and Lewis had the misfortune of losing each of their three babies as new infants.
In August 1966, Lewis was in a bad accident that left him paraplegic. Jeanne then cared for Lewis at home for many years. She kept a beautiful lawn and garden from which she canned many good foods to enjoy.
Jeanne was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary since age 22, in 1950. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors.
Jeanne was well known for her beautiful crochet work. Many folks have a piece to remember her by.
After Lewis went to the Good Samaritan Care Center in Battle Lake in 2002, she stayed a few years in Henning. After an illness in 2007, she then moved to Lakeview Senior Living which was connected to the Good Samaritan Care Center. She could then be close to Lewis again. They shared meals together, watched WWE Wrestling, read the newspapers together, and played cards.
Jeanne was a walker and would walk 2-3 miles a day in nice weather. In winter, she walked in the garage and the halls. She always took the stairs, and was an inspiration to many others.
After Lewis died in 2011, she channeled her care-giving to others at the care center and apartments. She took pride in setting out the song books before church on Sundays, also putting them away afterward. Church was the highlight of her week.
Jeanne loved doing puzzles, and many she would redo when that season rolled around again. She liked to play BINGO, trivia, and enjoyed Bible Study.
Preceding Jeanne in death were her parents; beloved husband: Lewis; son: Sandford Lewis; daughters: Connie Jeanne and Sandra Renee’; sisters: Bertha, Gertrude, and Marjorie; and brothers: James, Raymond, Milo, Warren, and Virgil.
Jeanne will be missed by two daughters at heart: Alice Schoon of Henning; and Deborah (Rob) Moll of Battle Lake; and Jim (Dawn) Wolf of Battle Lake; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
