Henning to take on second ranked Cass Lake-Bena on Saturday in Perham

The Henning Hornets wasted little time in getting back into action following an extended holiday break. 

Henning defeated Battle Lake 53-39 on Tuesday, before defeating Wadena-Deer Creek on Thursday by a score of 55-44 and Brandon-Evansville on Friday by a score of 74-63. This week the Hornets will travel to Verndale on Tuesday night, before hitting the road again on Friday night to take on the New York Mills Eagles. 

On Saturday the Hornets will take on second ranked Cass Lake-Bena at a tournament in Perham. The Hornets are scheduled to take on Cass Lake-Bena at 1:45 p.m. at Perham High School. 

The Hornets are 9-0 on the season and are ranked sixth in the state. They are also seventh in Class A in the QRF ranking. 

Tuesday

In a battle between the top two teams in the sub section to date, Henning was able to defeat Battle Lake in a low-scoring affair on Tuesday night by a score of 53-39. The contest was the first game for Henning since an extended break from action due to the holiday break.

“We are very proud of the effort from our guys tonight and the energy from our bench. We have not played for two weeks and it looked like it on the offensive end of the floor. We struggled to make shots, but our defensive effort and rebounding carried us through,” said head coach Randy Misegades.

The Hornets jumped out to an early lead and were able to make the most of their 11 offensive rebounds and 24 defensive rebounds as they limited a high scoring Battle Lake team to just 39 points for the game. Henning held a 29-13 lead at halftime.

“We were able to jump out to a 12-0 lead and held a nice margin for the rest of the game,” said Misegades. “Owen Buehler got hot midway through the second half to tighten things up a bit, but each time our guys responded. We have many things we can improve upon, but we are certainly happy with the win. Battle Lake is extremely athletic and a tough matchup.”

As a team the Hornets shot 39 percent from the field and had 14 assists on 21 made shots. 

Mason Hammer led the way offensively for the Hornets as he scored 19 points, while Kale Misegades scored 12 points and Tyson Misegades scored 10. Lane Dilly had a big night on the boards as he finished with 6 points and 12 rebounds.

Thursday

In a game that was close right to the end, Henning defeated Wadena-Deer Creek by a score of 55-44 on Thursday night. After leading by a score of 26-24 at halftime, the Hornets were able to hang on for their third conference win of the season. 

Despite the win, head coach Randy Misegades said the Hornets need to get back to work on the offensive end of the court by moving the ball around and getting everyone involved.

“We’ll take a win any day of the week, especially in conference. But, we really struggled to find any flow on the offensive end of the floor. We’re doing a poor job moving the ball and getting everyone involved. We are playing way too much one on one basketball,” said Misegades. “Our guys need to get back to playing as a group on both ends. WDC has some nice athletes and they played hard tonight. I give them a lot of credit for making things tough on us at times.”

The Hornets were led offensively by Mason Hammer who finished with 33 points on 12-19 shooting. He hit four 3-pointers in the win. 

Lane Dilly once again had a solid night rebounding as he finished with 5 points and finished with 13 rebounds, while Kale Misegades led the team with 6 assists and finished with 7 rebounds.

Saturday

Henning improved to 9-0 on the season and got back into their offensive flow on Saturday when the Hornets hosted Brandon-Evansville as part of a boys-girls doubleheader. 

The Hornets started strong and led by a score of 39-24 at halftime after they were able to shoot 44 percent from the field. 

“We finished off a strong week with a nice win at home over a very hard working Charger squad. We led by as many as 26, but then got a bit sloppy and complacent in stretches. We also committed far too many fouls, putting B-E in the bonus for a good chunk of the second half,” said head coach Randy Misegades. “We did a nice job sharing the ball today.”

The Hornets were once again led by the trio of Mason Hammer, as well as Tyson and Kale Misegades.

Hammer led the team with 26 points off of just 10-18 shooting, while Kale Misegades finished with 17 points and Tyson Misegades finished with 17 points of his own. Kale Misegades finished just 1 assist and 2 rebounds shy of a triple-double and Lane Dilly once again came up big with 6 points and 9 rebounds.
