With their 3-0 win over Battle Lake and 3-1 win over Park Christian, the Henning Hornets volleyball team improved to 22-7 on the season and advanced to the semi-finals of the Section 6A tournament. They will now play the top seeded Border West Buccaneers. The game will be played at the Fergus Falls High School, and game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. At the conclusion of this first match, second seeded Underwood will take on third seeded BBE.
In the match against Battle Lake the Hornets played consistently from start to finish. The first set was back and forth until the very end when they were able to finish 25-23. Big blocks from Brynn Reinbold helped to secure the set one win and changed the momentum of the match. Her consistent blocking all night made it difficult for Battle Lake hitters to get the ball to drop to the floor. She had a career high 8 solo blocks in the match. Lily Grieger and Hailey Hanson also plated big at the net and had 3 blocks apiece.
The Hornets also had some great defense in the back row by Hailey Fiskum, Abbigale Godding, Addison Bode and Bella Olson. As a team the Hornets had 42 kills, 9 ace serves, and 14 blocks. The Hornets also serve-received 92 percent to the target which helped our offense have success.
Leading the Hornets in kills was Addison Bode with 16 and Bella Olson with 11. Lily Grieger had 8 kills, Brynn ReiNbold had 4 and Haley Hanson 2. Alivia Emter dished out 36 set assists. Hailey Fiskum led the team in digs with 24. Emter also led the team in ace serves with 3, while Godding and Bode each added 2 and Zoey Gruber and Hailey Fiskum each had 1.
With the win over Battle Lake the Hornets had to travel to Moorhead to take on the Park Christian Falcons.
Henning knew the Falcons were big in the front row and had three very good hitters. With their size in the front row the Hornets knew they had to hit around the big block and cover their hitters.
One plan was to play Henning’s game and get them to play out of system as much as possible. The Hornets served aggressively throughout the match and stayed on the offensive end most of the time. As a team Henning had 50 kills, hitting at .220, serve-receive was 94 percent to the target, we had 4 solo blocks and 10 assist blocks and served 96 percent with 5 aces. Set scores were 25-16, 25-21, 23-25 and 25-23.
It was a great win for the Hornets, they played with a lot of grit and fought hard throughout the whole match.
Addison Bode led the way with 25 kills, 16 digs and 2 ace serves. Bella Olson once again had double-digit kills with 13, she also had 16 digs. Lily Grieger had 4 kills, Brynn Reinbold had 3 and Haley Hanson added 2. Hanson and Grieger each had 2 ace blocks along with 2 assist blocks, and Reinbold had 3 assist blocks. Alivia Emter had 47 set assists on the night. Hailey Fiskum led the team in digs with 20 digs and Abbigale Godding had a career high 17. Zoey Gruber did a great job serving as she went 18/18 on the night.
Head coach Kristy Finck said it was a total team effort, with team work anything is possible.
