The Henning City Council approved a small increase to its preliminary tax levy for next year.
During a special city council meeting on Monday night, the Henning City Council approved a 3.88 percent increase to its preliminary tax levy. The levy can be decreased, but not increased, when it is finalized later this year.
The preliminary tax levy will essentially mean taking the city’s tax levy from $410,000 to $425,000 and comes after three consecutive years of large increases in the levy. The tax levy was increased by 20 percent for both 2024 and 2025, while the tax levy for 2026 was increased by 15 percent.
Given the past three years of significant increases in the levy, mayor Jesse Hermanson said he would like to see the finalized levy be as close to a zero increase as possible, and even spoke in favor of trying to lower the tax levy if enough cuts can be found by the end of the year.
The other council members agreed that they would work with city staff and try to see if additional cuts to the levy can be made before it is finalized at the end of the year.
