Henning to travel to NYM on Thursday in PRC action

The Henning Hornets had a busy and successful week on the court as they improved their overall record to 7-1. The Hornets hosted two home games last week and traveled to Browerville to compete in the Browerville Invite.

On Tuesday, the Hornets defeated Breckenridge 3-1 and on Thursday they defeated Pillager 3-0 for their first Park Region Conference win of the season.

It was a battle from start to finish in the match against Breckenridge. Scores were 25-22, 25-21, 18-25 and 27-25. The Hornets played with a lot of energy throughout the match. Breckenridge has a really big front row, so the Hornets had to find ways to get the ball around the big block.

Head coach Kristy Finck said she felt Henning’s continuous attacking wore them down.

The Hornets were led by Addison Bode who had 17 kills and 14 digs. Lily Grieger had 13 kills and 2 blocks. Brynn Reinbold added 8 kills and led the team in blocks with 4. Haley Hanson had 5 kills and 3 blocks. Bella Olson led the team in digs with 29 and Hailey Fiskum had 21. Fiskum and Abbigale Godding each had 3 ace serves on the night.

Against Pillager the Hornets started strong in set one and then started to get sloppy and make too many errors. This allowed the Huskies to gain easy points. The positive is that the Hornets were able to regroup and win the first set 28-26.  Set two and three the Hornets controlled the offense and won by scores of 25-14 and 25-16.

Addison Bode led the team with 14 kills and 16 digs. Lily Grieger had 9 kills and 2 blocks. Brynn Reinbold and Haley Hanson each had 5 kills and 3 blocks apiece. Alivia Emter led the team in assists with 23. She also had 14 digs and 2 ace serves. Emily Hanson did a nice job setting the ball when Emter had to play defense, she ended the game with 7 assists. Olson, Fiskum, Godding and Gruber did a nice job picking up balls in the back row to get our offense going.

At the Browerville Invite the Hornets took first in pool play as they defeated Browerville 2-1, Brandon- Evansville 2-0 and LaPorte 2-0.

After pool play the Hornets were matched up with the first place team in Pool B, which happened to be the Braham Bommers.  They were by far the best team Henning has played this season. The Hornets fought hard but fell short, coming home with second place medals.

Finck said she was very pleased with how the girls played throughout the day. The Hornets had to adjust their lineup as Brynn Reinbold did not play due to an ankle sprain. The Hornets started a little slow in their first match against Browerville, but they settled down, started passing better and their offense got more aggressive.

Leading the Hornets for the day were Alivia Emter who had 70 set assists, 21 digs, 8 kills, 2 ace serves and 1 block. Addison Bode had 29 kills and 48 kills. Lily Grieger had 23 kills, 11 solo blocks, and 5 ace serves. Abbigale Godding had a good day serving as she led the team with 6 aces, she also had 30 digs on the day. Freshman Hailey Fiskum had 30 digs, 6 kills, and 3 ace serves. Haley Hanson had 8 kills, and 3 blocks. Freshman Jocelyn Oseien contributed with 7 kills. Zoey Gruber and Emily Hanson did a great job playing throughout the day, Hanson does a good job at the net and Gruber hustles in the backrow.

This week the Hornets host Barnesville on Tuesday and travel to New York Mills on Thursday.
