Take a drive along the Otter Trail Scenic Byway to Douglas Avenue in the heart of Henning and you will find the Henning Landmark Center at the intersection of Douglas Avenue and Second Street. The center, a large house built in 1914 and expanded in 1948 to serve as a doctors’ residence and medical clinic, is today a community center that is the pride of Henning.
Visitors quickly learn that the Henning Landmark Center is many things to many people. The center is available for public and private meetings, workshops, receptions and family gatherings. There’s a local history museum inside the center, arts workshops for pottery, woodworking, painting, printmaking and more.
“We have five air-conditioned retreat bedrooms, free wi-fi and smart room technology,” says director Dan Broten. “Of special emphasis is providing opportunities for people to learn techniques from talented individuals such as artists from the surrounding area. We encourage participants to gain confidence and explore their unique talents through art, literature and service to the community.”
Examples of usage of the Henning Landmark Center are many and varied, and among them are arts workshops for youth and adults, quilting retreats, mural painting, community events and gatherings.
“We always strive to provide programs and activities that meet the needs of Henning residents and those from our surrounding area,” Broten said. “We have an outstanding board of directors with a mission to improve facilities while expanding awareness of our local treasure.”
Broten, directors and volunteers, take pride that the Henning Landmark Center provides a safe and inviting location to share quality experiences. The center is supported by grants from the Lake Region Arts Council and private donors.
The facility is open Tuesday and Thursday from 1-4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or anytime by appointment. Call (218) 548-5760 for information or to reserve space for your future events.

In 2006 the building was purchased and restored with a generous gift from the Espeland Family Foundation. The facility reopened in 2009 as the Henning Landmark Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to the arts, local history and community meeting space. In December 2021 the Henning Landmark Center was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
