Otter Tail County is gearing up for another shot at the annual Governor’s Fishing Opener. The weekend is an opportunity for host communities to showcase their unique offerings to guests from across the state. This is the second straight year Otter Tail County was selected as the site of the Governor’s Fishing Opener. Last year’s event was canceled, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The county was chosen once again to host the event, which will center around the more than 1,000 lakes in Otter Tail County and the city of Ottertail.
Dozens of area students attended the annual Henning High School prom on Saturday night. The theme of this year’s prom was Prom in Paradise and was held at the Henning Festival Grounds and event center. After walking across the stage, students followed a group of pink flamingos to the back of the grand march.
If you build it they will come—or at least that is the hope of local volunteers who are planning a major enhancement project at the city park. Mike Helle and Dan Broten are leading a group of local volunteers who are planning to build a picnic shelter, as well as paint a mural on the bathrooms at the Henning City Park. The project will be completely funded by donations and provide another option for families to get outside and enjoy a nice Minnesota summer.

Fishing opener—Brandin Olson and Bryan Loots spent the entire weekend out on their boat, fishing the waters along the Otter Tail River and Otter Tail Lake. The boys, who both live in Ottertail, reported they had good luck during the opener. Warm temps and sunny skies provided an inviting weekend for all the fishermen and women out this past weekend.
The Warren family of Wadena relaxed on Mother’s Day with an afternoon of fishing together in Ottertail. Katlin, Wade, mom April and dad John cast their line at one of their favorite fishing spots.
The Ottertail City Council and the residents of Ottertail will be given a closer look at wastewater systems this Thursday evening. Prior to the Ottertail council’s monthly meeting, Curtis Sparks of North American Wetland Engineering will present a workshop on wastewater systems to the public. Sparks has been hired to construct a wastewater system for Thumper Pond, the golf course development owned by Verle Blaha.

Stars and stripes decorated the Henning High School gym for the annual junior and senior prom Saturday night. Barb Selvaag and Ben Amundson were busy serving punch.
Four juniors were selected by their fellow Henning High School choir members as candidates for the Arion Foundation Award for Choir, sponsored by the Henning Commercial Club. Vying for the award, which will be presented at the choir concert Thursday, May 20 are, Kay Masloski, Alex Peterson, Steve Formanek, and Amy Kevern.
Hats, fancy and functional, were modeled as the feature of the Henning Christian Women’s Club meeting at Oakwood Monday. The models were Goldie Eide, Ella Olson, Sheryl Misegades, Judy Erickson, Rose Marie Weiecke, Pat Volden and Karen Kawlewski. Other models included Alma Hemquist, Helga Olson, Melva Jean Nyberg and Sue Johnson.

Mrs. Margaret Halvorson of the Henning faculty has just been awarded a scholarship for the third “Workshop in Economic Education” at the University of Minnesota. The scholarship will cover room, board, and tuition. Four quarter hour credits will be granted by the University for participation.
The largest number of voters to turn out for a school board election in recent years Tuesday elected Dr. A.R. Thompson and Gareld Flom to positions vacated by Mrs. Ida Saetre and Roy Bjorkland, who did not file.
Urben Oscarson is the unanimous choice of the village council to fill the trustee position left vacant by the resignation of Dr. A.R. Thompson. in talking to Mr. Oscarson this Wednesday afternoon the Advocate learned that he would accept the position.
Mrs. Roy Miller, 60, of Grafton, N.D., mother of Mrs. Dan Souter of this place, was killed instantly Saturday evening by a N.P. train at a railway crossing there. The car stalled on the tracks while she was driving. She was the only occupant in the car, and her body was thrown out. The engineer saw the car but was unable to stop.

Dr. C.H. Johnson, the local veterinarian, who was taken to Fergus Falls on a charge of disorderly conduct, was taken critically ill while in the county jail. Friday he was removed to St. Luke’s hospital, and given the best medical care. He grew steadily worse, and on Monday evening he passed away.
