Scott Hart has never been a stranger to the wrestling room at Henning High School. A 1986 alum of Henning, Hart wrestled for the Henning-Deer Creek Cavaliers during his high school career. Fast forward four decades, and Hart is hanging up his whistle for the final time, as the longtime head coach of the Otter Tail Central wrestling team. “I am not going away, but I am just going to step back,” he said. “The other thing is I want to see other people get involved.”
The hallways, and vast outdoor space at Lutheran Island Camp, will soon come alive. After essentially being shut down last year due to COVID-19 restrictions, the bustling camp on the shores of East Battle Lake is gearing up for another busy summer of campers, counselors, songs, activities and opportunity to share the message of God through worship. While the start of camp will be about a week later than normal, it will give staff members an extra opportunity to get ready for camp in light of the continued COVID-19 pandemic.
The Ottertail Community Center will be getting a fresh look. During its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday night, the Ottertail City Council approved a bid from Erik Ness to install a variety of landscaping options at the community center. As part of the bid, the new landscaping at the community center will include a variety of plants including: three arborbitae, eight spirea, three hosta, five grass, one blue spruce and one dogwood.

A tradition continues in Ottertail. Olson Tire & Oil opened this month in Ottertail in the building that once housed a station owned by Eldon Lueders. “We plan to continue in the tradition established at this station of providing full gas service,” explained station operator Maria Gaudette. Jesse Olson, Gaudette’s fiancé, manages the station with the help of Gaudette.
Residents from across the region gathered in Ottertail Saturday night for the Ottertail Rod & Gun Club’s Turkey Feed. The group cooked 16 25-lb. turkeys for the evening’s dining. The money raised goes to yearly club projects.
Otter Tail Coalition of Lake Associations, also known as COLA, will kick off the 2001 season with focus on the water quality testing program sponsored by MPCA and COLA. The April 28th meeting will take place in the Ottertail City Community Center beginning at 9 a.m. Last year 32 county lakes participated in the program. COLA hopes to add to that number this year.

Owner Glen Thomas looked over the remains of the Vining car wash building which was destroyed by fire early Friday morning. A passing trucker noticed the fire and aroused some neighbors who reported it to the Vining Fire Department about 3:45 a.m. When a faulty fuel pump on one of the trucks caused some problems. the Henning department was called to assist. Cause of the blaze is yet undetermined, although the state fire marshal has been asked to investigate.
The three members of the HHS junior class selected by their fellow band members as finalists for the Arion Foundation Award for Band, presented annually by the Henning Commercial Club, are Kay Masloski, Alex Peterson and Steve Formanek. The award will be presented at the spring band concert April 29th.
A major remodeling project at the former Sinclair station in Henning is currently in progress in preparation for its opening sometime during the first part of May. Jim Wallevand of Vining will be operating the new gas and service station.

A new culvert, cause-way, and roadway will be constructed on isthmus to the Island Camp on East Battle Lake as soon as road restrictions are lifted according to Rev. Beck of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Run and Dehlmann of Clarissa will move their equipment here and do the work, which is being paid for by this district of the Missouri Synod.
Also scheduled for the camp are 12 cabins and three unit lodges. Construction will start on July 1st and will be completed in about three months. Herman Buising of Deer Creek will supervise the work. The cabins and lodges will be built of Berger lumber. Plans are for three unit villages with four cabins to each unit. Every cabin will house eight persons for a total capacity of 96, not counting present facilities.

There is quite a bit of activity in Henning real estate transfers this spring. The latest, during this past week, is the sale by Geo. W. Moats of this residence to J. W. Wilson, the auctioneer. The price paid was $2,000. The new owner expects to take possession this Wednesday Mrs. Ida Miller who has just vacated the Moats residence leaves this Wednesday for Fergus where she will make her future home.
M.C. Barry of Wyndmere who bough the old Farmers grain elevator here, has taken charge and will open it for business. He also purchased the Nelson home just vacated by R.C. Shaw. Mr. Barry’s family consists of his wife and mother-in-law, his children being grown up.
