Volunteers step forward each year for fish fries during Lent at several churches in Otter Tail County. Such was the case at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Henning. The turnout was very good even though many community residents were in the Twin Cities cheering on their Henning boys basketball team at the state tournament.
The menu at the church in Henning included Alaskan walleye, potato, cole slaw, vegetables, dessert bar and beverage. Takeouts also were available.
Church volunteers for fish fries in Henning and other areas of Otter Tail County step up and work in the kitchens, serve the fish and associated food, perform clean-up duties or just lend a helping hand.
It’s also a great opportunity to make new friends as a church volunteer.
The Diocese of St. Cloud, which includes Catholic churches in Otter Tail County, actively supports and helps promote Lenten fish fries throughout west central Minnesota. Fish fries are a social event, providing an opportunity for parishioners and community members to come together and enjoy a meal and fellowship.
Others emphasize that Lent is a time of spiritual reflection. Abstaining from meat is common among Catholics during the Lenten season. Members of the Catholic Church observe Lent that starts with Ash Wednesday services and concludes on Holy Thursday services shortly before Easter.
