The Henning girls basketball season came to an end a little sooner than the team had hoped after losing to West Central Area in the Section 6A championship game on Thursday night by a score of 64-53. Henning finished its season at 20-2, won the Park Region Conference with a 12-0 record and won the Section 6A North Sub-Section Championship and were Section 6A Runner-ups. Head coach Mike Hepola said once the team gets over the disappointment of not achieving their ultimate goal of a return trip to the state tournament, the team has a ton to be proud of.  

The Henning EDA affirmed its desire for the City of Henning to not sell Countryview Apartments last week. During its regularly scheduled meeting last Thursday, the Henning EDA unanimously approved a recommendation to not sell the city-owned facility. The issue was brought to light after a recent city council meeting in which selling the city-owned apartment building was brought up to help cover future city expenses.

A recent Amazon scam almost resulted in a local person losing out on hundreds, or even thousands of dollars, had it not been for the quick thinking of Sarah Douglas of Dollar General in Henning. Douglas recently identified what turned out to be a phone scam for a customer.

Several area actors are taking to the stage this week to share in the experience of the Wadena Madhatter’s production of The Sound of Music. While performers range in location and age, Henning has the distinct privilege of sharing local talent in the play. Five Henning personalities will transform into the musical characters portrayed in the Austrian-based show, while three others work behind the scenes to make the performance shine without incident.

Members of the Henning Area Community Choir will present their annual Easter Cantata on Sunday, April 8 at 2:30 p.m. in the elementary gym at the Henning Public School. The cantata is under the direction of Richard O. Johnson, who is retiring this year after 34 years of teaching music at the Henning Public School and 22 years of conducting Palm Sunday community choir cantatas in Henning.

Judy Doolittle has found the career that allows her to fulfill all her younger dreams. “Honestly, growing up I wanted to be a counselor, artist and a hairdresser,” explains Doolittle. “Now I get to do all three.” Doolittle studied Cosmetology at Wadena Technical College after graduation from Deer Creek Public School. She spent the next 19 years doing hair in Brainerd, Henning and Wadena. She most recently worked at Village Hair Design in Wadena.

Henning’s firemen were called out to the Irene Bengtson home in Leaf Lake Township on Sunday, although the fire was out by the time the trucks arrived. The call came into the fire department about 2 p.m. Sunday when the wind caused a grass fire to spread near some burning trash at the Bengtson home, according to Dick Cloeter of the department.

Henning’s delegates to the state FHA convention in Minneapolis last Thursday and Friday were Kay Masloski, Kelly Johnston and Janet Grefe, members of the Henning High School chapter of Future Homemakers of America. Their advisor, Wendy Poffenberger, accompanied them to the convention.

Henning High School freshman Ross Greenwalt was the recipient of the free throw shooting percentage award sponsored annually by Henning grocers. Basketball coach Dick Steensland made the announcement this week that Greenwalt set a record in the six-year history attempts for 88 percent. Also during Satellite Conference games this past season, the freshman made 30 consecutive free throws, a conference record.

The American Legion Auxiliary is sponsoring Girls State this year, through the cooperation of school and the faculty, Francis Juvrud was chosen with Anita Sauck as an alternate. The qualifications under which the above were chosen outside of being in the upper third of their class are leadership, character, courage, honesty and cooperativeness.

Minnesota Girls State is a practical application of Americanism where girls of high school age receive one week’s training in citizenship by living together in self-governing groups, patterned on governing bodies in city, county and state.

Harold Smith, while burning some old straw bottoms yesterday, also burned two hay stacks containing about 16 tons of good hay. He did not intend to burn the hay. He thought he had put out the straw fire but when he returned from dinner he found the hay stacks on fire and had no means at hand of combating it.

F.W. Smith of the town of Henning was seriously injured last Friday, and for a while was not expected to survive the shock. The accident happened when he fell from a wagon load of egg cases, striking his head on the ground. Although badly injured it is expected he will recover.

In Anoka, Judge Orie Wyman of Anoka, the only woman municipal judge in Minnesota, ordered a Minneapolis patrolman and his companion held to the District Court, under $1,500 bond each, after their arrest in an automobile chase in which a deputy sheriff fired several shots at them. The men were charged with transporting liquor.

In St. Paul under the new state law regulating highway crossings have been designated as dangerous and are being equipped with “stop” signs requiring every vehicle to come to a full stop before crossing the tracks.
