Kale Misegades etched his name atop the all-time scoring list at Henning High School on Thursday night.

Beck Thorson and Andrew Suchy attempt to pull down a rebound during last week’s Park Region Conference win over New York Mills.

Already the all-time leading scorer for the boys program, Misegades broke his cousin Ellie Dague’s school scoring record, which stood at 2,248 points. Dague and Misegades are the only two people in Henning School history to score 2,000 career points. Misegades has scored 2,272 points and has the remainder of his senior season to add to that mark.

In addition to breaking the scoring record, the Henning boys basketball team improved to 15-0 overall with a pair of wins last week.

This week the top ranked Hornets will travel to Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal on Tuesday and host Menahga on Thursday night.

In a match up between the top two teams in the Park Region Conference, the Henning Hornets were able to shoot 50 percent from the floor and a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line and they upended the New York Mills Eagles 80-61 on Tuesday night. The Eagles came into the game with a record of 9-1 with their lone loss being by just two points to Pillager earlier in the season.

“Quality win in front of a full house in Henning. New York Mills is a solid team with a bunch of wins under their belt this season,” said head coach Randy Misegades. “We didn’t do a good job guarding the dribble tonight. But, our guys stuck together and made enough plays to secure the win.”

The Hornets led 38-26 at the halftime break in what turned out to be a back-and-forth first half of action.

In the second half the Hornets were able to pull away thanks to a balanced scoring attack that featured six players scoring at least seven points in the game.

Misegades said the Hornets received some important minutes off the bench from senior post player Andrew Suchy and junior Beck Thorson who stepped up in extended action as the team battled some foul trouble throughout the contest.

“I thought Andrew Suchy and Beck Thorson gave us big minutes off the bench tonight. Those guys came up big when we needed them,” said Misegades.

The Hornets were led offensively by Kale Misegades who scored 34 points and pulled down eight rebounds. He also led the team with five assists and four steals.

Ryan Despard scored 14 points to go along with six rebounds, while Zack Wiederich scored 11 points on just 3-5 shooting and pulled down seven rebounds of his own. Dawson Bushman, Todd Bjerke and Thorson each scored seven points in the win.

The Henning Hornets overcame an unusually slow night from the floor by shooting just 40 percent, but knocking down 11 3-pointers and going 20-22 from the free throw line on their way to an 83-51 win over Parkers Prairie on Thursday night. The game improved the Hornets to 15-0 on the season, but it was a basket by senior Kale Misegades that was the highlight of the night for the Henning faithful who made the trek to Parkers Prairie.

Misegades finished with 29 points and broke Henning’s all-time scoring record by breaking his first cousin Ellie Dague’s record of 2,248 points. The Henning senior now has 2,272 points and has 11 regular season games and the playoffs to add to that mark.

“Congratulations to Kale Misegades as he broke the career scoring record for girls and boys at Henning tonight. Kale broke the previous record of 2,248 points that was set by his first cousin, Ellie Dague. Kale now sits at 2,272 career points,” said head coach Randy Misegades. “Kale Misegades found himself at the free throw line a lot as Parkers Prairie clearly wanted to be very physical with him. I am proud of how composed our guys remain when teams play that brand of basketball.”

Defensively the Hornets held the Panthers to just 38 percent shooting and forced 23 turnovers in the win. The Hornets led by a score of 54-29 at halftime, but the score was single digits midway through the half before the Hornets went on a late run to pull away for good.

Due to extremely cold temperatures the game was moved up a few hours and featured just the varsity teams taking the court. The cold temperatures, combined with just one game, led to a smaller-than-usual crowd in what has become a bit of a rivalry game through the years.

“We’re happy to get this game played with Friday’s game already postponed. An early start combined with a small crowd made for a much different atmosphere than we had Tuesday night. There was not a lot of energy in the gym tonight,” said Misegades.

Even though Kale Misegades led the way with 29 points and nine rebounds, Randy Misegades gave credit to Zack Wiederich and Beck Thorson for their effort on both the offensive and defensive end of the court. Wiederich went 8-12 from the field including 6-9 from behind the 3-point line as the junior finished with 22 points, while Thorson finished with five offensive rebounds and three points.

“Zack Wiederich shot the ball very well again which is great to see. Beck Thorson’s five rebounds on the offensive end helped us score some second chance points. Those extra possessions are huge. And the other guys were all solid in their roles,” said Misegades.

Dawson Bushman and Todd Bjerke each finished with 11 points, while Ryan Despard, Thorson and Bradon Grabe finished with three points apiece. Elliot Severson rounded out the scoring with one point.
