For nearly 20 years, Ken and Toni Erlandson have been providing a warm home and meals to children during their time of need—sometimes with not more than a few moments notice. As foster parents, the family has opened their home to children from across the region and provided a warm environment for children of all ages.
With all of the uncertainties due to COVID-19 and nine open rooms, Willow Creek is on track to have one of its better financial years since at least 2007. That was the message received by the Willow Creek Commission on Tuesday night. According to figures presented by the Willow Creek Commission, the facility has lost about $6,000 year to date in 2020. Those losses do not include bond payments on the facility, which is approximately $90,000 per year, but does include depreciation of about $60,000 per year.
For as long as she can remember, Hannah Augustus has wanted to own a daycare. While some young children were playing with Legos, Play doh and video games, Augustus was busy playing daycare and longing for a day to be a part of molding the next generation of children. That dream is finally coming to reality as the daughter of Dwayne and Lisa Augustus of Ottertail has opened her own daycare in the heart of Ottertail.
Winter sports contests and competitions under sponsorship of the Minnesota State High School League may resume beginning Thursday, Jan. 14, after updated information within COVID-19 Youth and Adult Sports was announced last week by the Minnesota Department of Health. Included in the announcement was the release of a new document COVID-19 Sports Practice Guidance for Youth and Adults.

A Parkers Prairie man was injured when his vehicle left the road and rolled several times down an embankment on County Road 65 between Henning and Parkers Prairie on Wednesday, Jan. 3. Milo Arden Wark, 57, received bruises and contusions as a result of the accident. Wark was traveling south along County Road 65 in Folden Township around 2:30 p.m., when he lost control of his 1991 Dodge pickup at the corner of 65 and Snow Lake Road.
Many years ago, the Henning Fire Department sold a piece of park land on the north side of Middle Leaf Lake, just behind the line of cabins streaming eastward from Middle Leaf Resort. That sale was the basis for the fund to build a community swimming pool in Henning. With $20,000 in the kitty, establishing a pool for Henning seemed a cool possibility. However, the idea was put on the back burner, and it wasn’t until fall of 1999 that renewed interest sparked volunteer citizens to step forth to organize a committee to make the dream a reality.

Winners in the men’s division of the annual match play tournament at Henning Lanes last week were Jim Frederick, first place; Dave Koppe, second; and Dave Ferber and Doe Theurer, third and fourth. Taking the top honors in the women’s division were Kay Johnson, first; Sue Eckhoff, second; and Vera Eckhoff, third.
Donald Rousu, 17, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Darrell Rousu, was rushed to the hospital for a gun shot accident that hit him in his lower abdominal area, after the incident which occurred about 5 p.m. last Thursday. The youth underwent extensive emergency surgery for four hours and was in the intensive care unit in critical condition early this week. According to Mrs. Rousu, her son remains in serious but stable condition.
A second-year wrestler on the Henning mat team is David Deckert, a junior and son of Carl Deckert. Wrestling at 138 pounds this year, he has also been a letter winner in football for two years and was the defensive point leader in football this year.
Freshman Linda Thalmann, daughter of the Tony Thalmanns, is a 5’2 1/2” guard for the Hornets. In her second year in the basketball program, she has also taken part in volleyball and track.

Dr. and Mrs. Lewis left Wednesday for Sacramento, California where they will visit their son, Lloyd Lewis, and family. Lloyd who has charge of the Shell Oil Company, is being sent to the Hague, Netherlands, for six months. His wife and children will accompany him.
Leste Kruts, son of Mr. and Mrs. Miles Kruts of this place, is entering the army for service next Monday, January 15, 1951. He has been operator at the Soo Line here.
Miss Myrna Lindstrom, grade school teacher here for the past five years, tendered her resignation to the local board at Christmas time and is being replaced by Mrs. Clayton Johnson. Miss Lindstrom, who taught the fifth and sixth grades intends to further her schooling.

Chas. Patterson and son, Russel closed a deal last week whereby they became owners of the Home Bakery in Henning, which has been conducted in that village for several years. A new bread mixer has been ordered and the new owners will take charge of the bakery as soon as it is installed.
Two automobiles, a Dat driven by Eldon Dahn, and a Ford, driven by a 14-year-old son of Andrew Hanson came near the Trinity Church Cemetery. Beyond a few bruises and a bad shake-up no one was hurt. Both machines looked as if they were fit for the junk heap. But the owners are trying to put them in running order again at a local garage.
In St. Paul, Minnesota’s farm production in 1925 broke the record of output set by the big crop of 1924, Paul H. Kirk, state agricultural statistician said in issuing final estimates showing that nine principal crops totaled 8,000,000 more bushels than in 1924.
