Kale Misegades recorded a triple-double and scored a school record 49 points as the Henning Hornets defeated Lake Park-Audubon 86-57 on Saturday afternoon. Misegades shot lights out by hitting 18-26 shots from the floor, including 5-8 from behind the 3-point line. He also registered 10 assists and pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds in the win.

Bradon Grabe takes a 3-point shot late in Saturday’s win over the Raiders.

“Kale was able to get hot near the close of the first half and send us into the break with a nice margin. He had some success setting up his teammates along with scoring the ball himself at a very high clip. Unofficially, 49 points is a school record in Henning,” said head coach Randy Misegades.

Kale broke Ross Greenwaldt’s boys school record of 44 points in a single game that was set in 1979 against Parkers Prairie. This is just the fourth time in school history a Hornet boy scored 40 points in a game as Curt Peterson scored 42 points in 1948 against Hewitt and Kale scored 40 points against Frazee on March 7, 2024.

A late run broke the game open in the first half with the Hornets taking a 49-24 lead at the halftime break, before the reserves played a number of extra minutes in the second half to start out the season with an 86-57 win on the road.

Todd Bjerke looks to drive to the basket during Saturday’s regular season opener in Audubon.

“It is always nice to get that first win to begin the season, especially in a situation where we are playing a lot of new guys. It will take a little time for guys to figure out their roles and where they fit. But, for the most part, we were pleased with the effort,” said Misegades.

With just one returning starter from last year’s Class A state consolation champions in Kale Misegades, four Hornets made their first career start on the varsity level on Saturday. Starters on Saturday included Todd Bjerke, Beck Thorson, Dawson Bushman and Ryan Despard.

Despard finished with 16 points with four 3-pointers, while Bjerke and Bushman each finished with six points and Thorson finished with three.

“I thought Ryan Despard and Dawson Bushman did some nice things on both ends of the floor in their first career starts,” said Misegades.

Also scoring for the Hornets was Easton Misegades and Zack Wiederich who each scored three points in the win off the bench.

Henning will return to action on Tuesday night when they host Battle Lake, before traveling to Bertha-Hewitt on Thursday in their Park Region Conference opener.
