Henning jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Hornets defeated Browerville 48-27 in Friday’s regular season opener at home. The Hornets’ defense kept the Tigers off-balanced throughout the night as they held a 30-12 lead at halftime.

Browerville was able to cut into Henning’s lead a bit in the second half, but the Hornets led by a comfortable margin the entire way to hang on for their first win of the season.

“We started with good energy tonight and the crowd gave us a great atmosphere to play in. The girls dug in on defense and held their ground all night. We shot it well early which helped us get a decent halftime lead,” said head coach Ryan Emter. “I was happy with our effort the rest of the way. We know we have a lot to improve on, but it was a nice way to open the season.”

Eight Hornets reached the scoring column for the Hornets with Alivia Emter leading the way offensively as she knocked down four 3-pointers to finish with 18 points. Bella Olson scored seven points, while Callie Thompson, Abbi Godding and Stella Iliff all scored six points, Addison Bode and Lily Grieger scored two points apiece and Monica Hansen rounded out the scoring with one point.

Thompson led the team with eight rebounds with Bode picking up six rebounds of her own. Iliff led the team with five assists with Emter and Bode each picking up four steals in the win.

The Hornets will return to action on Tuesday night as they travel to Ashby to take on the Arrows. The varsity game is scheduled to tip off at 6:30 p.m. before the teams takes a break for the Thanksgiving holiday.
