0Local group creates 24 custom sitting mats for school library

The Quiltlanders group completed another quilting retreat at the Landmark Center in Henning. As part of their retreat in Henning the group created sitting mats for students at the Henning School Library.
The Henning Public School Library has a new touch of warmth and comfort thanks to the generous hands of the Quiltlanders Quilting Group. The group recently crafted and donated 24 handmade “sitting mats” for students to use during library time—an alternative to sitting directly on the floor.

Each of the 24 mats is one-of-a-kind, stitched with care and creativity by 13 dedicated women. The process was truly a labor of love, with each mat taking several hours to complete. Quilters involved in this project are Brenda Brown, Paula Wentz, Mary Eidem, Chris Peterson, Jamie WIlson, Karen Drown, Marlys Kimes, Leila Hagen, Ruth Vetter, Clarene Nichols, Kathy Trites, Mary Kerekes and MaryAnn Wilke.
Several members of the Quiltlanders shared how meaningful it was to create something that would directly benefit children in their own community.
“We were so happy to be involved in making these mats for our local school,” one quilter said. “It feels good knowing they’ll be used and appreciated by the students.”
The new sitting mats not only brighten the library space but also reflect the community spirit and generosity that Henning is known for.
Laura Smith and Pam Wiese, Chairwomen of the Pages for a Purpose library campaign, are looking to build on this spirit of creativity by adding an after-school sewing opportunity for both youth and adults. They are hoping to partner with local quilters who are willing to share their knowledge and love of sewing with others.
“My mom has sewed for 70+ years and is still sewing strong today at the age of 83. She instilled the love of creating into myself as well as my two daughters, and I truly hope to pass this wonderful craft on to others. I am grateful for these fabulous women using their time and beautiful fabrics to create mats that will be used for years to come,” said Wiese.
