Breanna Bunkowski reaches for a deep tip during last week’s game against the Lake Park-Audubon Raiders in Henning. The game was held in the high school gym for the first time this season.

After a very busy week the Henning Hornets improved their overall record to 12-9 last week.

The busy week started on Monday, Sept. 29, when the Hornets hosted Lake Park-Audubon for their first home game after 49 days into the 2025 season. Head coach Kristy Finck said it was really nice being in the gym, as they have not had ideal practices and home games due to the new floor that was put in. She said the Hornets are still not in the gym fully, however, they are hoping this Wednesday, the C-Squad, JV and Varsity can all practice in there together.

The Hornets had to battle to come out victorious over LP-A as the Raiders are a very scrappy team, they serve aggressively, have some solid hitters and give their opponents a lot of out of system balls. The Hornets took sets one and two, set three went to LP-A and Henning fought hard and pulled off the fourth set.

On the night, the Hornets had 35 kills, and served 95 percent along with 7 aces. Henning struggled serve-receiving in set three, but it improved some in set four. The Hornets were led by Myiesha Antoni with 10 kills. Brynn Reinbold led the team in blocks with 3, Cambrie Johnson led the team in assists with 22 and also had 3 ace serves. Bella Olson led the team in digs with 24.

Addison Bode sends a spike past a pair of Lake Park-Audubon blockers during last week’s game against the Raiders. The game was the first one held in the high school gym all fall after the gym floor was replaced in August.

On Tuesday, the Hornets hit the road again as they traveled to take on the Underwood Rockets. They too are a very scrappy team, they serve aggressively, have some solid hitters and give teams a lot of out of system balls. The Rockets took Henning off guard in sets one and two as the Hornets could not get any momentum going at all during those two sets.

In the third set Henning changed their line up, going with two setters in the back and big in the front row. The Hornets adjusted to the change and played aggressively. They fought hard and took games three and four.

Game five Henning had to go back to their original line up as Abbi Godding had played her allotted five sets for the night. The Hornets struggled from the start, and just could not put it all together for the win.

Finck said she gives Underwood a lot of credit, they never quit attacking and found ways to put the ball down against the Hornet defense. On the night, we did not hit at a very high percentage, they had 41 kills as a team and served 95 percent with 3 aces.

Myiesha Antoni again led the team in kills with 11 and in blocks with 3. Cambrie Johnson led the team in assists with 28 and Bella Olson had 26 digs.

Thursday, saw the Hornets on the road again, as they headed to Wadena-Deer Creek for an afternoon game. WDC is the top team in the PRC. Both teams went into the match with a PRC record of  3-0, but the Wolverines had too many offensive weapons and won the match in three straight sets.

Head coach Kristy Finck said the Hornets battled hard. She was proud of the girls in the first two sets, but she felt they mentally shut down in set three. It was hot and loud in the gym as the whole WDC student body along with parents filled their gym for the game.

Myiesha Antoni led the team with 10 kills, Cambrie Johnson had 28 assists, Bella Olson had 26 and Lily Grieger had 4 blocks for the day.

After a short practice on Friday, the Hornets had to travel to Perham for the KLN Tournament on Saturday. This is a great tournament to go to because there is always great volleyball. The Hornets went into the tournament hoping to place in the top seven (out of 16 teams), and they did just that.

Henning’s first match was against Park Rapids and the Hornets won 2-0. The second and third games Henning lost 1-2 against Barnesville and Parkers Prairie. In their third game the Hornets defeated a scrappy Sebeka team 2-1.

Head coach Kristy Finck said the KLN Tournament is always a great tournament for the Hornets, as they are playing tough matches which is always good for the team and it is getting closer to the end of the regular season, so playing against tougher competition is very beneficial.

The Hornets had 139 kills on the day, hitting .187, we served 95 percent with 17 aces and their serve receive was better than it has been in a while. Leading the Hornets was Addison Bode with 32 kills. Myiesha Antoni had 29, Alivia Emter had 26 kills, Emmalyn Bergstrom had 22, Brynn Reinbold had 15 and Lily Grieger had 10. Cambrie Johnson led the team with 56 set assists and Abbi Godding 52. Alivia Emeter did a nice job on digging as she had 64 digs, and Lily Grieger led the team in blocks with 12.

The Hornets continue this week with another busy schedule, however, Henning has three home games. On Monday they hosted Brandon-Evansville, Tuesday New York Mills comes to town and on Thursday, Sebeka will come to town.
