Hornets return to PRC action on Thursday against Wadena-Deer Creek

Myiesha Antoni sends a spike past a would-be Lake Park-Audubon blocker during Monday’s 3-1 non-conference win over the Raiders.

The Henning Hornets only had one regular season game last week and then traveled to Dassel-Cokato for their second tournament of the season. At the end of the week, the Hornets overall record is now 9-5.

The Hornets lost 3-0 to a very talented Barnesville team on Monday night and then went 1-3 at the Dassel Tournament. Even though Henning did not pick up more wins, head coach Kristy Finck said she feels the team showed much improvement. All the teams they played this week were Class AA or AAA teams. Playing against these teams will help Henning to quicken their transitions on the court.

Emmalyn Bergstrom and Brynn Reinbold attempt to block a shot during Monday’s non-conference game in Henning.

Against Barnesville the Hornets fought hard, but their size and quickness from the Trojans wore Henning down. In each game Henning would hang with them until they reached 20 and then they would finish strong. Game scores were 20-25, 21-25 and 18-25.

Henning’s overall passing is not what they would have liked, so they did not attack like they should have. With attacking, the Hornets were on defense most of the game.

As a team we served 95 percent with only one ace serve. Henning had 34 kills, hitting at .144 and only had 5 blocks.

Myiesha Antoni led the team with 11 kills and 2 solo blocks. Addison Bode had 9 kills and Emmalyn Bergstrom added 6. Bode and Alivia Emter each had 15 digs and Cambrie Johnson had 32 set assists, 10 digs and 1 ace serve.

At the Dassel-Cokato Tournament the Hornets played the host school, Dassel-Cokato first. They were a very well rounded team and had strong hitters in each position. Henning played with energy throughout the match, but their quickness and experience was too much for the Hornets. Game scores were 18-25, 23-25.

Henning’s second game in pool play was against Melrose. Going into this game Finck said she really felt the Hornets had a good chance of picking up a win. However, they came out flat and played with little energy. The Hornets ended up losing the first set 25-27.

In the second set the Hornets were on defence the whole game. Their serve receive was very poor and they could not get their offense going. The final game score was 19-25.

In the third pool play game the Hornets faced Mankato East. Finck was pleased with how they played in this match. The team had more energy and attacked with more power. Henning lost the first set 17-25, won the second set 25-20 and in the third set they won the race to 15.

After pool play, Henning’s last match was against Sibley East. The Hornets knew this was a match they really needed to win. They did not want to go home without winning a game. The girls started the match a little slow, but as the match went on they started believing and playing with confidence. The Hornets were down 20-22 when Cambrie Johnson went to the serving line and finished serving out the game 25-22. The Hornets dominated the second set, winning by a score 25-9.

As a team Henning had 87 kills, hitting at .107, they served 95 percent with 18 aces. They ended the day with 13 blocks and their served receive accuracy was at 85 percent.

Emmalyn Bergstrom led the team with 20 kills and 2 solo blocks.  Addison Bode had 19 kills, 39 digs, and 2 ace serves. Myiesha Antoni had 18 kills and 3 solo blocks. Alivia Emter had 17 kills, 3 ace serves, 34 digs and 15 set assists. Brynn Reinbold had 8 kills and 3 solo blocks. Cambrie Johnson led the team in set assists with 58 and had 4 ace serves. Bella Olson had a great day playing defense and serving, she had 43 digs and 8 ace serves. Also seeing a lot of court time was Breanna Bunkowski, Lily Greiger, Hailey Fiskum and Lillian Moench.

The Hornets have a very busy schedule this week, on Monday they are hosting Lake Park-Audubon, Tuesday they travel to Underwood, on Thursday they travel for an afternoon game against Wadena Deer Creek and then on Saturday they travel to Perham to play in the KLN Tournament.
